This question was asked in today's edition of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Does your employer allow for flexible hours or scheduling, such as working late or coming in early, to allow for time off on other days so that you can enjoy the summertime?

All I can say to that is:
yeah right!

Yah
. My kittens were born on Saturday so I worked from home on Monday just to be sure. I still like to work 5 days a week just so I'm there, but I do get to be flexible with the times and what location.

I wish!

Being the main office girl - I have to be here everyday - because of course, answering the phones isn't in the job description of anyone else!

not really. We get out vacation time, which is 1 week... but that's it. If it's something special, I'll just tell them "look, I won't be in, I'll do what I can before I'm scheduled to be out to make things go smoother, but I won't be in". But someone physically has to be here at all times, for security. We have alot of blueprints to many important buildings in our office.... if someone got through and got ahold of them, you never know now-a-days what might happen!

What is this "vacation" time you people speak of? :p I haven't had a vacation in seven years (and it was 3 days of unpaid leave). And no, my employers are NOT flexible; the only time I get off (aside from the weekend and stat holidays) are when I call in sick -- for which I do not get paid. I hate being a temp. *sigh*

Nope. I have to be here from 7:30 to 4:00 Monday through Friday except on government holiday 3 days sick leave and 2 weeks vacation.

Nope, not one day.
If I were a permanent employee I might get paid holidays or sick days or what have you, but since I'm a temp contract worker, I get nuthin'. Words and emoticons cannot express how much that sucks.

Sort of... with my company I can take paid time off, or I can dock it. Yet, I've been saving all my time this summer, because my Mom is coming in from Alaska at the end of September, and I want to take off a long period of time then. Seeing all my coworkers leaving when they want and coming in when they want is a bit frustrating now, but when I get to go out with my Mom it will all be worth it.

Am I the only one who has an awesome boss/job???!

I love my boss, he is so nice and one of the most flexible bosses ever. I could tell him right now i was leaving early and he would say no problem have a nice night!

I do complain about my job sometimes but overall it's fun, I make decent money and I work for a great guy so I can not complain!!

Yep. We have a modified schedule from Memorial Day through Labor Day. We work an extra half hour Monday through Thursday and then get off at 2 on Friday! I love it. Works great for me! I really wish it were that way year round!

I'm really fortunate and work for an awesome company. (It's a nonprofit, so they tend to be more flexible.) We have the option of working extra hours each day (not too big a deal since we work 7.5 hour days to start with) then getting a half day off each week or a full day off every other week. I'm not doing it this summer because I had a lot of days off I needed to use up, plus I missed a lot of days earlier this summer when my FIL passed away. But next year I'm all over it!

I'm the boss and business is slow now so I can do whatever I want. However when I was in corporate world-we NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER got any type of flex times. In the winter we would have needed a foot of snow on the ground before they would let us leave!!! It was sad.....

My company doesn't really approve of flex hours. But I can change my hours...I started working 8:30-5, then due to my kids school schedule changed to 8-4:30. And if I work late, I can flex and leave early later in the week. But we can't just shift our hours from day to day to suit our needs!

My boss is awsome, and I adore him. He left early today to go to a Cub's game. We get generous vacation (PTO) hours, so I can take time off when needed.

Well, my main job yes, as long as it isn't super busy he doesn't care where I work from. In fact he will tell me not to bother with the train ride on occasion and I will work from home

My other job, only when it suits them, they have someone coming in at 7, they expect me there, but it doesn't necessarily mean I get to leave after x number of hours, typically if I am in early I leave late

My BF's business, definitely yes because I just do as I please.

We have set office hours and I'm the one that needs to be there for ALL of them
Everyone else comes and goes. Sometimes I won't do any work for hours and STILL can't leave. I left early once in the past 2.5 years and only because it was christmas eve and there was absolutely nothing to do. And even then it was only an hour early..

I've worked hourly jobs though that were much more flexible as I wouldn't be being paid for leaving early.. THis one is salary, and my boss is very strict on time worked..
