My partner in crime here at work and I were talking, and she's never heard the phrase, "bought the farm". Have you guys? What about "pushing up daisies?" I then started laughing and asked her if she ever heard of, "raining cats and dogs". She threw her pen at me!

I thought those were pretty common in the American vernacular. Is she not a native speaker or from one of the commonwealth's? I'm interested to see what the UKers and the Aussies have to say about this one.

What does pushing up daisies mean? I thought it meant when someone died, they are pushing up daisies. I have a feeling I am wrong though.

I own entire books on this subject...

euphemisms for death are fascinating, "kicked the bucket" is one of my favs. And I just have to quote the infamous Monty Python dead parrot sketch:
"He's not pining! He's passed on! This parrot is no more! He has ceased to be. He's expired and gone to meet his maker! He's a stiff. Bereft of life, he rests in peace. If you hadn't nailed him to the perch he'd be pushing up the daisies! His metabolic processes are now history. He's off the twig! He's kicked the bucket, he's shuffled off his mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisible! This is an EXPARROT"

Raining cats and dogs is fun too.

KatieMae, really? I grew up in "A-HIa"

How about: 'Kicked the bucket' and 'Bit the big one?'

in a pile of open toed shoes!
one I say to my little ones (jokingly of course!):

"you want a knuckle sandwhich???" or how about "put up your dukes!"

and I like to quote the wizard of oz if anything is crazy or unusual:

"I don't think we're in Kansas anymore!"

I have heard 'raining cats and dogs' but never 'bought the farm' ..

when it's busy somewhere, I say "everyone and their dog is here!"
