What have I gotten myself into!!!

Well, some of you know that I take in exclusively leukemia positive kitties, and as of right now, my count stands at 7. I've had as many as 9 at once, and that was where i set my personal limit....I'm about to overshoot that by 2 I have adopted a total of 6 kitties with Eilcon's help over the past 4 months, and I also have adopted a few positives in the past from a local rescue group. Well, after Simon passed, I contacted that rescue group to let them know I was "open for business" again Simon made adopting adult cats very difficult, as, for lack of a better description, he would kick the crappola out of them I was HIS Meowmy, at least that's how he saw it, but he didn't really have a problem with kittens for some reason guess they were non-threatening. Anyway, my contact e-mailed me Friday about a year old maine coon-type girl kitty (Jinx), and was I interested? of course I said sure, and I called the director yesterday to get more information, and somehow before the conversation ended I had agreed to take in a 3-legged positive torti named Misfit that had been living in a cage at the vet's for the last 8 months and two 9 week old double-positive (FeLV & FIV) babies. I've had a double positive in the past, and I'm not worried about them spreading the FIV as that is only spread through mating and fighting, and all my kitties are fixed so.... Also, with these last 4 cats, as long as I take them to the vet that had them, all medical care is taken care of, and the director of the rescue group said I can use their discount at Petsmart for food, litter, etc. I think I need to get sucker tattooed on my forehead, I'm excited but also feeling a little overwhelmed. I pick them up tomorrow after work, wish me luck

You are an angel for these kitties! It sounds like they've mostly had some very difficult lives until you came along to rescue them.
It would be difficult to have..what..11!? kitties to care for, but hey at least you get discounts and partially free vet care!

Oh my Katie, you make so many saccrafices for your kitties! Good for you girl!
Remember, if Jerry comes home with a sick kitty this year from his bikeathon and it happend to be positive, you said you'd adopt it!

I love how you say you've adopted six kitties over the past few months with my help!

Seriously, I think your willingess to give these special kitties a home and give them a chance when most other people don't have the courage to is awesome!

I can't wait to see pics of the new additions and hear what names you've decided on!

Congratulations!

Katie, you must be an angel in disguise. I feel so guilty that all the FeLV + cats at the shelter here are euthanized, and even though you only take in some, you are making a huge difference.

You know...angels in disguise can have "sucker" tattooed on their foreheads! Who is going to be able to fit 11 kitties in your siggy, though?

Thanks Natalie! I'm sorry about all those babies, but now they're somewhere that they'll never be sick

Hmmm that's a good question....Karen??? I may have to split them up, maybe I'll name these new additions jewel names, so I'll have the Greek group and the jewel group

Oh, Katie! You are such a great person for doing this! Oscar is just like Simon, though. I am scared to get another kitty because Oscar LOVES being an only child

But anyways, good for you! And good luck! If you need help with ANYTHING, you have my number!

Thanks Courtney! You may regret saying that

My friends keep teasing me that one day I'm going to show up for work with a cat attached to that back of my shirt, or buried in my hair Did I mention I have 2 dogs and a rat too??

Kaite...I've got two questions for you!

1)Have you ever visited a shelter, or does Eileen just send you kitties?
2)What's the story on all the other kitties you currently have? I don't know much about them at all....

Special delivery for Katie! Well, for Tig and Pandy I met Eileen in Columbus for the great kitty swap and for Ismene, Demeter, Zeus and Medusa, Eileen and another rescue group coordinator who was fostering the minis (Demeter, Zeus and Is) actually delivered them to my door! what service Tig, Pandy, Ismene, Zeus and Demeter are all from the same mother, from a house where the woman let positives intermingle with healthy kitties, but strangely enough, their mother never was infected Medusa was a stray/semi-feral almost, that showed up in the coordinator of the group Eileen volunteers for yard. She is a very scared, nervous little girl who lives behind my dresser right now, but I have faith she will eventually join the rest of the family. Pandora tries, but Medusa won't play with her Sapphire is from Michigan, from a shelter that was going to euthanize her and her friend Charlie (who has gone to the RB) but really didn't want to. The coordinator of another rescue group I used to work with got them here and I took them from there. I have had Sapphy for over 2 years and she has never been ill Simon was found in the woods and tested positive, I adopted him throught the same group that I am getting the next 4 from I don't know the whole story on those babies yet, but the one that started it, Jinx, was given up by her owner because she got a dog guess she didn't have enough time for the both of them.

i hope you don't mind another question. when you take these kitties in, is it more of a hospice kind of thing, that you just try to give them as good a life as you can until they pass on, and that their time is very limited? or can they live a long time with medication and treatment?
What a wonderful person you are, the world needs more people like you. Can't wait to hear more about them.

No problem! Ask away!

I don't look at it as a hospice type of arrangement, but I guess, in a way, it's sorta like that, but the cats aren't suffering or anything. I personally don't medicate, as nothing has really been proven to extend the lifespans of these cats, but when they get ill, I try to do what I can, but most times the leukemia is unstoppable. Actually, most of my cats have passed from other diseases that the leukemia makes them extra susceptible too, like Simon with the bone marrow thing. My very first FeLV cat died from cancer. I really try not to think about my babies dying, although I know it most likely will happen, and I made the mistake of fooling myself into thinking that Simon would never get sick, the reason that his death really hit me hard.
One thing I wish people could see, is that these cats have an IMMENSE capacity to give/recieve love. It's almost as if they know that their time is shortened and need to cram all the love of a lifetime into whatever time they have.

Good luck with your new babies!
