If there are little piddle-puddles on the floor then the time is right to introduce the litter. Just fill a short-sided pan (or use those aluminum baking dishes you can buy from the grocery store or WalMart) with unscented, non-clumping litter and so long as Momma is confined with the babies, she will teach them what to do with it. In the way of help, you can put the babies in the litter about 5 to 10 minutes after each meal and if you find any accidents, clean them up with a bit of tissue and then put the tissue into the litter.

At this stage, you can't be worried about the smell - it is gonna be there, no matter what you use. But with kittens, you cannot use clumping litter with them until they are older and past the eating-everything stage. To keep the odor down, just make sure you remove the solids at least twice daily and thoroughly clean/change the boxes (have one more box than you do kittens) twice per week.

i dont have enough floor space for one box per kitten, so i will have to go with two big ones. i get the Tidy cats, and i scoop 2-3x a day anyway, so that should work ( i'll get the non clumping litter).

Big boxes will intimidate small kittens. I'd go with the smallest boxes you can find or little baking pans and just put them all around the room, close to their favorite places if not right on them. If there isn't a box in sight when they have to use it then they will go right where they are.

Sounds like you're on the right track. The foil lasagna pans work really well too...even a cookie sheet with a lip around it works. Anything shallow should work. If you actually SEE a kitten piddle or pooey in the potty-pan, provide some type of positive reinforcement, such as offering a toy, or a little treat. This makes it more likely that they will continue going we're they are supposed to. Actually, if the litter is left out, and you set kitten in it about 10 minutes after a mealtime, they usually figure it out on their own.

I don't know how old your kits are, but my orphan babies were able to use it as soon as I put the litter in there with them. They were around 3 1/2 weeks to 4 weeks old when I found them.I jsut showed them the pan and they knew what to do.Good luck!!!
