Okay, I called the vet that takes our spay certificate for Gretta, and they said they would spay her at 6 months (grumble, grumble, but okay). Yesterday I decided I would call them this week and beg that they fix her now (at 5 months) because 1. It's August-kittens, kittens everywhere about Oct. it seems
, and 2. My dog just went out of heat, and I don't want to go through another miserable heat cycle with another animal (dog has to have recheck with a cardiologist before she can be fixed this fall
). For the last 2 days, she has been a growling, hissing, ornery, aggressive (and teething
) cat from heck, but we thought it was because we came home smelling like strange dogs and a baby goat
. Tonight, she was sleeping in the middle of a kitchen rug and rolling around on her back with that sappy look on her face, alternated with growling and hissing- "Get away from me!" " I lovvveeee you." behavior and trying to run out the door worse than usual. So I am thinking "NOOOOOOO!"
But, I said all that to ask this:

How long will the actual cycle last, and if I count today as the first day of heat, when can I get her fixed that she's out of heat (they charge extra if they are in heat, and I understand that it is more dangerous then anyways). Is there any way to calculate it or catch her when she is out of heat, and hurry her off to get fixed? BTW, this is my foster kitten, so any way to keep the expenses down I need to try. Also, I can't adopt her out with her heat related attitude problem- she's GOTTA be fixed first!

HELP PLEASE!

My cats first heat was 5 days. But all cats are different. It could be up to 10 days. First heats are usually different though, like puberty.

Ling's "fake" heat cycles (long story) were a week long and 4 days long. She did have ONE natural heat cycle just before being spayed and that lasted 4 days for the entire thing.

Some vets will spay a cat in heat..they will charge more due to an increase in blood at the time. Have you checked the list of low cost clinics for Alabama to see if there are any close by that you could contact regarding having her spayed once this heat is over??

Have had a spay certificate since she was about 3 months old, but thanks!
She is supposed to be our foster kitten, but asking for a good vet reference seems to weed out potential adopters pretty quickly!
. (Shots, spay certificate, cat, food, toys- all free with a good vet reference- nothin'!
!)There are several vets that take this certificate, but all of them are 30 min south of here, and the vet I'm taking her to is also one I am trying out for my dog with a heart condition, so I really want to take her there. There just aren't many vets here yet who do early spay/neuters (and I've called about 2/3rds of the ones on her certificate when I was putting up "for adoption" flyers for her
). Maybe they'll catch up soon- they fix them before they leave the pound, etc. early, so... I would just REALLY like to get her fixed while she's not in heat, for both her and I.

Thanks for your help!
I'll mark yesterday, and count out 10-14 days and make an appointment- I can always change it if I'm wrong, I guess, but I think I'm supposed to make it about a week ahead.
