Maybe its because I'm a...
Very similar to a thread below, but about a different kind of fur. My kitten tilly has extremely glossy flat fur. It's almost completely flat along the skin, quite thin. It kind of looks like its painted on. She fairly recently lost her tufty kitten fur. Much as I'd like to attribute it to a good diet and lots of love and petting my other kitten Archie has normal short matt soft tufty hair.
My kittens, Tilly in brown, Archie in grey

And again, but with more shine

My question is how common this type of fur is, and is it indicative of any particular breed or type of cat?

Wow, nice cats! Usually a short tight glossy coat is found on oriental shorthairs, burmese type of cats. Not sure if the bengals also have that kind of coat but I know the OSH and burms do.

Almost looks kinda oriental shorthair - cinnimon colored.

Yes, Bengals do also - it is called glitter which if I am not wrong comes from the domestic cat part of the Bengal.

My Godiva, a Burmese, has that kind of fur. It's so pretty.

Your kitties are so pretty, too! Is the grey one a ticked tabby?

Yeah, I realised it thanks to goldenkitty45. Didn't you post a thread asking if your kittens were ticked?

You are right about bengals having extremely short glossy pelts, but it's not the glitter that causes it. Glitter is found on many bengals, but not all and it's not mentioned in the breed standard. Glitter is caused by a clear, hollow shaft of hair. Light entering the hair shaft causes a prism like effect making it appear as if the cat has been dusted in gold sparkles.
This trait did come from the domestic cat and not the asian leopard cat.

that's what Java's fur is like, too - & i've always thought she looked kinda 'oriental' - long nose, long limbs, slim, muscled - & that flat, short coat. cute kits!

well, altho Cable has a boyfriend, she's very flattered...if Archie's really looking for a sweetheart - Java's single! of course, she's also 1.5 years old, so she's older than he is!

I don't think he'd mind an older woman, even if she is twice his size
He had his heart set on cable though, Tilly's quite miffed at being ignored

Aww! i want a ragdoll! He's so beautiful... ahem... sorry Archie, guess you lost out little guy. Although I bet in a year or two he'd be able to take him on. Archie has Huge paws to grow into! Although I may end up with a smallish cat with big feet

i think paws are a good indication of future size. Cable had huge ears as a kitten, but never got large - she's actually my smallest cat. Chip, my largest, has HUGE paws. i got him as an adult, so i don't know what they were like as a kitten, but his are the largest of all my cats.

They are a bit of a liability at the moment- he's not the most co-ordinated of cats
Both him and Tilly have been known to fall off a chair (or five) after trying to clean themselves while sitting on the edge. And he trips over his paws ALOT
