Littermaid Plus Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box
My husband and I were thinking of spending a little $ to buy a Self-cleaning Cat Litter box for our new cat because we want to keep our house minimal odor free, but we first want to know how many of you have used it and what are your experiences-what do you think of it? Do you have to buy a special cat litter for it? Is it worth the extra money for one? We both believe it would make our changing the litter box a 'better experience' for everyone involved (mainly me).
Thanks for your input.

I would love to get one of these: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Produc...&N=2002+113307
It isn't electric, you flip it over and then flip it back and then pull out the drawer where the clumps are.

Not exactly what you're looking for. But some cats won't use a box that makes a big loud noise and moves. Then, some will love it to death for being so clean.

I have had a littermaid now for almost 10 years and we (the cats and I) love it. I don't think I will ever go back to the normal litterboxes. I upgraded to the Littermaid Elite model a few months ago and I like it better than the basic model. The Elite model is MUCH easier to clean. The rake comes off so you can just take it outside and hose it off. The rest also comes apart easily.

I used a liter maid for a few years. It was okay and did what it was supposed to do but I wanted something a little less messy. The problem with the litter maid is that it seems to waste so much litter. When it scoops a lot of litter gets dragged in the bin with the waste. Also the teeth on the scoop can be a pain to clean. At least it was to me. The bin where the waste goes can get filled up fast and the replacement liners are a little costly (I ended up lining these plastic liners with a palstic bag so I didn't have to go out and buy new ones every other week). Also my cats like to throw litter everywhere and the tent wasn't much help with keeping the litter inside the box.

After 2 years with that I looked into getting a different litter box. I tried a different brand but it was horrible and ended up returning it to the place I bought it from. I ended up going with the litter robot. I highly suggest it. Even though it's more expensive and kind of an eye sore to some people it works very well. The company is really nice. I had a small liner tear and they sent me a new one with no questions asked (they paid shipping for sending the old one back). The litter robot doesn't waste much litter and because it's enclosed my cats don't toss litter all over the floor. Also you can use regular 13 gal. kitchen bags for liners so you don't have to buy over priced liners through them. I've had my litter robot for about 2 years now and I don't plan on getting a new one anytime soon.

I've never used an automatic litterbox, but I have a friend who has the litter robot and says it's great.

The litter robot looks really cool!

I will say that it is possible to have no noticeable odor, even if you don't have an automatic litterbox. If you scoop every day and maybe add a little baking soda to the box as needed, you shouldn't have any strong odors.
