I have 2 kittens about 3 months old and heard that wellness is the best cat food available. But they both seem to be having some smelly gas from it. Anybody know if this is normal or if wellness is the best?

Have the kittens been on another brand of food before Wellness and did you not notice it then? If they've been on Wellness since you've had them, do they comsume their food rapidly? If so when eating ravenously they increase the amount of air they take in while they eat and this could cause gas.

It also could be that the food is too rich for them. Wellness is a good food but it doesn't mean that it will agree with every cat or kitten. When I switched my cats over to Wellness I noticed they ate half as much as they normally do and often leave some food left in the bowl which is VERY odd to see in my household.

Is there anything else thry are eating that could cause this? Getting into the garbage, table scraps, cat treats?

I would also bring in a stool sample to your veterinarian and have it checked for worms as this could be another cause although it's more common in dogs sometimes intestinal parasites can cause gas in cats.

Yes, I heard that on wellness the cats only eat half as much. Supposedly it's because they don't need as much food because wellness has more nutrients. (True?)

I tried this awhile ago and had the same results with a few of my cats. I also found that three of my cats wouldn't even eat it. So I went back to my regular brand of food. Wellness uses vegetables and fruits in with their food and that could be causing the gas, I am not sure. All I know is it didn't work out for my team at all.

They seem to like it so I can deal with the gas.

Now that is interesting. I knew that any form of onion was toxic to cats but not garlic, and I have in the past given very small amts of garlic to cats in their wet food to encourage them to eat. Thankfully, no ill results have come of it but I will stop that practice as of now.

So you're saying that there is garlic in wellness wet food? I'm amazed that a company that's based its product on healthy food for animals would put a toxic substance into the food.

I'm not sure about the cat food, as I've only used a small sample as a treat. But we had our last puppy on the puppy dog formula of this, and it gave him a lot of gas, apparently for dogs at least, that is largely attributed to the amount of grains which are used in this food.

Many good pet foods use garlic. While large amounts of garlic are harmful, the amounts contained in pet foods are small and would not be enough to cause harm. Garlic can be beneficial too which is probably why some pet food companies add it. Garlic is a natural antibiotic, immune stimulant, regulator of digestion and detoxifier.

Here are some links:
http://www.lef.org/magazine/mag2001/june2001_qanda.html
Quoted from the link -
"Aged garlic extract (Kyolic) contains primarily water-soluble garlic compounds, and is safe for animals. Although there isnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t enough garlic in most pet products to cause harm, the benefits of garlic as a flea repellant are not proven."

http://www.vetinfo.com/ctoxin.html#O...s%20and%20cats
"Large amounts of garlic will produce similar toxicity problems in both dogs and cats."

According to their website
Wellness uses garlic -
garlic:
Fights parasites in intestinal tract, repeals fleas and ticks and boosts immune system. It is also palatability enhancer. It also helps lower blood cholesterol and promote digestion of food.

Innova uses garlic -
Garlic is valued for its anti-oxidant properties, as well as its enjoyable flavor.

Solid Gold uses garlic -
To support a healthy immune system.

I woulnt say you only need to feed half as much but you definatly feed less. Many of the higher quality cat foods have more calories per cup which is why you feed less. Wellness dry cat food has 422 kcals/cup while Purina Cat chow has 374 kcals/cup. Im not sure how the canned food calories compare though.
