HELP!! Cat Introduction not working out

Hi,
I've had a cat for 12 years(Rascal) and 3 months ago just adopted a 1year old cat(Sammy) with a heart condition. I thought I did the introductions right but my older cat is still pissed off about the new cat. He hisses at him every time he walks by him. Once in a while they will play but only for 3 minutes. I have tried to give Radscal special time but he is angry with me as well. I thought about bringing in a new cat to play with Sammy because I don't want Sammy to get stressed out with Rascal. Rascal is constantly trying to beat up Sammy and Sammy never fights back. I don't want Sammy to be afraid and I don't want Rascal to be angry. Would a 3rd cat make things worse?

dawn, don't add another cat, let the two of them work it out. If they are only hissing, you have done good. Just leave them be, unless there is a full on battle and try not to worry. Hissing is normal.

I agree, it doesn't really sound like there are any problems to me either. Hissing is no big deal especially if they do play occationally. My cats still hiss as each other once in awhile and they have lived together for 3 years now. As for one going after the other, and the other backing down, they are probably establishing who is alpha cat in the house. I wouldn't worry about anything.

If you are though, get a Feliway plug in and put a could of them around your house. That should calm things down a bit. But unless they are drawing some serious blood in each other, you have nothing to worry about. Let them be.

I just introduced 2 cats and had no problems.

I am not sure if it was the plug in or not because I had plugged it in days prior to bringing in the new kitten.

But I think it may have had something to do with it because there was no hissing and I did not have to seperate them. They were playing together the 1st night! But I think some of it was luck on my part as well

What's a Feliway plug and what is it supposed to do.

So should I interveen when Rascal swats at Sammy? I don't want Rascal to think it is OK to be mean to him.

I would not interfere with them unless it is obvious he is hurting him. I think he is probably just showing him who is boss and they will work it out.

Feliway is a plug in that releases a cat pheromone that helps calm them. It is supposed to be good in stressful enviornments, to help with urine marking, scratching issues and making transitions easier. They say it works with most cats but some seem to be immune. It is a little pricey..I got mine for $30 online but it lasts 1 month and is definately worth the money.

I also have the spray which helps with trips to the vet.

it took my kitties almost 4 months before they got near each other. they hissed at each other all the time and would have slap fights. however, there was usually a chair or something in between them and it got all the abuse LOL while moving, i discovered chloe had hidden all her toys in a box of shoes so patches (the new kitty) couldnt play with them
they still have their daily hissy fits (sisterly love lol) and yesterday i came in and caught them sleeping in the chair together. as soon as they realized i was there, they hated each other again hahaha

to sum in up.....just be patient
