One of our vendors came in today, and we were all talking about them closing the shop and what not (yes, its going to happen, which is why I'm looking for another job
)

And this individual told us that since our business is "Incorporated", they might not have to pay us unemployement. Is that true?

I've been searching the net, trying to find something - but I've come up empty handed so far. Does anyone know anything about these laws?

We're pretty much in the dark here, as the owners won't tell us anything about them closing, which means, we all have NO idea when we're gonna be out of a job.

Ugh

If you get fired or laid off you can get unemployment. The rules may differ where you live but I am pretty sure that as long as you don't quit you can receive unemploymeny $$.

I don't think that individual was correct, it is my understanding that if a company has employees, it has to pay unemployment taxes and that is where unemployment payments come from

We've just been hearing SO many rumors and whatnot - and its getting so annoying. I would just like to know some laws about this!

I've never been so scared about not having a job before, this is insane.

Kenz you can't let ewhat everyone *thinks* is right make you worry more! Poor girl!! I suggest you head down to your local unemployment office and talk to someone down there about the laws and maybe they can even help you find a job!

Oh I know... but its still seriously nerve wracking just hearing what everyone says. My boss is gone today, but I'm going to talk to him tomorrow. I wish we knew what was going on with the business! I don't even feel like doing anything, just knowing that its all worthless anyways.

This is very good advice.

There will always be rumours in a situation like this, Babyharley, and most of them will have little or no truth to them.

Prepare yourself by going straight to the source, and ignore the rumour mongering.

What source? The unemployment office? We can't go to the owners, they won't talk about it. They tell us its (get ready for this) "None of our business".

How can asking for information from your unemployment office be worthless? They are THE source you need to go to to have your questions answered, as they are the experts in unemployment rules in your area.

Going to them for answers should actually take some of the anxiety off of you, please get in touch with them rather than just worrying about rumors!

Big hugs, hang in there!!!

I definately meant the unemployment office or something like a citizen's advice bureau, not work. Although I am angered by it, your work's response doesn't surprise me. The incredible arrogance of the uncompromisingly incompentent is ever present.

I sometimes really wish it wasn't illegal to hit stupid people.

(It wouldn't solve anything, I know, but god I'd feel better).

Yes, I would definitely talk to your local unemployment office. It seems that there is a condition that might prevent a company from paying unemployment taxes, but it's not what the company is catagorized as (Inc, LLC, etc). I think its how they file...but of course, that could just be me adding to the rumors.

Just look up their phone # and give them a call. If this guy is right, at least you will know for sure and can mentally prepar yourself.

The simple fact that a company is incorporated does not mean that you cannot collect unemployment. There may be other things in your particular state, but incorporation alone does not exempt a business from paying unemployment tax.

Kenz...I'm pretty sure I can answer your question. Dad's business is 'incorporated'. He has to pay unemployment. I am 99.9% sure that you will get unemployment.
