Hi, Can anyone fill me in on how they do a ultra sound on a kitty cat? It will be for rectal bleeding. Do they drug the cat so they can keep him still while doing the test or do the just hold him down? The internal med specialist wants to do one on Tuffy to get a better idea on what is going on with him.

All my cats have had some kind of sedation - they were awake but really relaxed, and they will partially shave your kitty over the area where they will be working.

Tyler, who has health issues, recently had an u/s for his lack of appetite and loss of weight - they shaved part way up one side and some of his abdomen (they ended up really focusing on his liver).

We have only had to sedate 1-2 cats for an ultrasound, a majority of them do fine. If they are getting an abdominal ultrasound, I will shave the entire abdomen. That is the worst part because the sound of the clippers can make the kitty a little nervous. Then, once the u/s starts, they are usually pretty still. We also let the owners hold on to the front end and they usually talk to their cat which I think helps a lot.

It's up to the doctor whether or not you will be able to be present or not.

Good luck, hope it goes well!

Ooh...I wish I'd had the option to be present! With the way a number of u/s on various of my cats over the years, they are done by a visiting vet who comes to my vets practice once a week for scheduled u/s etc., and always gives light sedation, never allows owner to be present.

Nedicks had an ultrasound on her abdomen recently for bladder stones, and they didn't shave her, which really surprised me. As for sedation, at my vet, they will only sedate if they absolutely have to, and they didn't have to with Nedicks. We did not have the option to be with her, we had to drop her off and come back and get her later.

Tuffy seems to be coming around on the Z/D food and the vitamins so maybe we won't have to do a ultra sound and a colonoscopy which was also talked about maybe being done. I hope he gets better soon, he has been though so much already.
