I'm currently temping at a major corporation, doing data entry, and I'm not overly fond of my job. I'm in the process of trying to find a better job, and I'm in the running for a position I'd really like, that makes full use of my skills (e.g. isn't just data entry), where I'll make more money and will save money because it cuts down on transportation costs.

So ... I think my temp contract is about to offer me a permanent position. I don't WANT to work here permanently, but I can't afford to turn down work. But what if I say yes and then get the job I want at the other company? What if I say no and the other job doesn't pan out? I don't want to take this permanent position only to quit in a couple of days because I got the job I wanted. And I've been wondering if I should ask the temp agency to re-assign me, because I really am unhappy here. But it's full-time work and I need the money, and if it became a permanent position that would come with benefits (I think -- the job I want DOES come with benefits) which I also really need.

Argh, argh, argh. I don't know what to do. I hate being indecisive. I am not, by nature, an indecisive person, but this is too important for me to just do what I normally do, which is fly by the seat of my pants.

If they offer you a permanent position ask them if you can have a few days to think on it. I am sure they will oblige and then if the other job pans out then you can kiss your current job good bye!!

Do you know when the other job will make a decision about hireling you? If it is only a few days I would ask the place you are currently working at for a few more days to think about it tell them you have to evaluate your options to see if it will be a "good fit" for you and your career goals. If the job you want isn't deciding for a few months I would take the Permanent job until Then. Most employers will understand that you have to find something that will work for you, beneficial to you both financially and emotionally, you don't want to be stuck someplace you hate and it will reflect in your work.

I am in a similar Dilemma right now I have a job I love, but am contract with no benefits. I have been offered a job in my field, with full time, permanent with benefits in a different country on the other side of the world. It also pays a lot more so I'm weighing all of my options.

I hope both you and I come to the right conclusion for both of us I wish you the best. And don't take my opinion as the only one research what is best for you even make a list of pros and cons

Good Luck!

Thanks for the replies!

They did offer me a permanent job, but it's in a different position -- I'd be doing customer service instead of data entry. I've asked for more time to think about it: the hours are different from the ones I'm currently working (I prefer the hours I'm working now), they made no mention of pay or benefits (or even vacation time -- with the job I'm aiming for, I automatically get two weeks vacation time from the get-go, because that time is the plant's shutdown and they don't need office staff then), and it's a high-stress position right now because the company's undergoing a transition that's been really hard on everyone.

I don't know when the other company will decide; soon, I hope. *sigh* It would be nice to be working someplace permanently, however; I feel like my life is on hold because I'm not!
