Sad Story and Question:

About two months ago, my dad's two cats, Foster and Wallace passed away. His new wife is a huge animal lover, they have a menagerie (4 dogs all shelter dogs that normally wouldn't have been adopted, guinea pigs, fish, lizards, and now two new kittens--more about them later.) They live on 7 acres and the cats were free to come and go as they pleased, they were neutered, UTD on vaccs, etc; very well cared for. About two months ago they started noticing that both of their cats skin turned yellow and they became lethargic. They took them to the vet for treatment and were told that thier condition was ther esult of being bitten by a tick that has also been on a bobcat and they eventually died of the disease. My father couldn't remember the name, so that's my question. Has anyone ever heard of this disease and do you know what it's called?

Funny Story:

To replace Foster and Wallace (as my step-mom was heartbroken) they adopted two shelter kittens just days before Rubys and her kittens came into our lives. These kittens are not allowed outside at all, they have boarded up the cat door. My dad has always been a dog person and growing up on a farm thought that an animals place was outside for the most part. Anyway, I was showing my dad the kittens yesterday and apologizing for the smell. Ruby really stinks it up, depite my furious daily cleaning of their bathroom. My dog-lover dad says, you really need to get her on a high quality food like Royal Canin or Nutro then she'll only poo once a day. I had NEVER heard of those foods until I got on The Cat Site, but here is my dad spouting them off to me. I told him right now that's a stretch on our budget (feeding 7 and all), we're currently using Iams, but once the kittens are gone to their new homes we are switching. Then he proceeded to recommend WBCL over Feline Pine. Later on he said, and this is the biggie, you really did a good thing for Ruby, domestic cats do not belong outdoors. (Well, duh! But I never thought I'd hear him say that!) I thought it was really cute and wanted to share!

That was my first suspicion, that he has been lurking on here. Honestly, I think all of his knowledge comes from his wife!

I will look into those conditions you listed. Thanks.

I've read though those web sites, jcat, but none of them say anything about bobcats. The vet said that the disease had to be a bobcat-tick-cat transmission. He said that he loses them 99% of the time, and the only "treatment" is sub-cutaneous fluids and time. We have a lot of bobcats in the mountains south of here (about 45 minutes), where my dad lives. It just seems crazy, but very sad.

Thank you. That links sums it up nicely. We are in Arkansas (where they have been seeing it), so it all falls into place. Now, I wonder, why couldn't my 47-year-old father remember something as simple as "bobcat-tick disease"?

The doctor probably gave the long version.
