You could buy one of those small rubber brushes (like a curry brush). But I find small toothed combs to be the best for long or short hair cats. You can brush/comb once a week....more often if shedding a lot.

I love the Zoom Groom, and more important, so do my cats. All I have to do is say "brushie-brushie?" and they go running to the cat room for their brushing.
I got one of those metal loop-type things with a saw-tooth edge called a shredding blade? or is it shedding blade? whatever.....and that works real good, too, although the cats don't like it as much.
