Condolences on your loss of Dexter - 3 years was the prime of life for a rat. We used to have hooded rats that were also family members - they would interact with the cats, even share the food dish. It is always difficult to lose a pet; are your cats showing any signs of missing him?

an ice cube in Iowa...
I used to own Campbell's Russian Dwarf hamsters...there are many people that don't place the same type of value on "pocket pets" as they do on their larger furry friends. The truth is, is that rats, mice, hamsters, guinea pigs, etc. are wonderful pets, and true companions such as cats and dogs. They too are truly unique and special...I hurt tremendously whenever I lost a hamster baby.

RIP Dexter. You will be greatly missed!
