i was sitting here surfing the net, with Wonton asleep in my lap, his head in the crook of my arm as usually (because he really does love me
). i paused from looking at my puter screen to pet him, and as i glanced down at him, one eye slowly opened about halfway..the other was still closed. thought he was waking up, but then he started twitching like he does when he's asleep, and his eye started rolling around in his head. "aww", i thought, "he's dreaming". i went to go back to the computer screen, but i heard a wierd exhalation, and i looked back down, and his lip was curled, and he was hissing in his sleep! not a full hiss of course, cos his muscles were partially sleep-paralyzed, but you could definately tell he was hissing. i've never seen him do that before. i watched him for a minute and again went back to the screen, when he started twitchingn a lot more in my arms, the hind feet kept twitching, and his lips kept curling, and he kept making a hissing sound, and it was getting louder, and it seemed like he was having a bad dream (else why would he be hissing?) so i decided i should wake him up. i gently nudged him-nothing. i did it again-nothing. i did it one more time, and he jumped and awoke with a start, and looked at me wild-eyed like "where the heck am i?".

it was just trippy-ive never seen him have such a vivid dream, or hiss in his dreams. has your kitty ever done this?

yeah.... at first i just thought "oh, isn't that interesting", but it seemd like it was getting really intense, he was hissing a lot, and cats only hiss when they're really upset/agitated, so i thought it was best to wake him up. i do wonder what he was dreaming of though. i wish i knew his historyy before i found him. i guess everyone with a rescue wonders that. where was he born? did he have a good kittenhood? did anyone hurt him? how did he come to be on the street? i wondered if he was dreaming of a past experience...or just having a shadowy scary dream the way humans do sometimes-shapeless menacing dark forms chasing you. i'm glad i was there to wake him up too. he's laying on the window sill gazing out into the darkness right now

Bit has done something similar. He'll be twitching, and then he'll start to bear his teeth. I've scooped him up and set him in my lap when that happens. His mommy has nightmares too!

The cats don't really have such full on dreams - although their paws can get very twitchy - but the dogs have really major ones. They whine, twitch and lately, they bark. Little puppy barks, that are very, very sweet to listen to (though we always wake them because they get quite distressed in their dreams sometimes) but the other night Ruby did a big bark in her sleep and woke herself (and the rest of us!) up. It was pretty funny, I wonder what she was dreaming about?

I have had dogs to growl and bark in there sleep. It was pretty funny. shenadoah is pretty bad about having vivid dreams I guess. He will be sound asleep start meowing or hissing or something wake with a start and take off running thru my moms apartment. He is a destructive kitty anyways, so who knows what goes on in his mind.
