I've really been wanting to save another kitty from the Humane Society, but I'm much too scared. I'm scared that a potential adoptee could somehow catch distemper, which is what JC died of. I know I have to wait a while before I get another cat since it could get distemper. Scratch could also have the possibility of not get along with a new cat... arrgh.
Don't pay attention to me, I'm overtired and I'm just ranting!

Or neither your cat or your future cat could have distemper, and you could save a wonderful kitty's life and live happily ever after together

Sometimes you just have to throw caution to the wind... you just may end up with a beautiful cuddly new baby!

Instead of the humane society, why not try a no kill rescue group like Pals? Their cats are neutered, checked out by the vet, and without parasites. The cost is no more than what you would pay for all that with a new cat. The last cat I got at the humane society was half dead, spent another 150.00 on top of the 70.00 I gave them, to save his life. In fact every shelter cat I got has had fleas, diarrhea, its a shame they don't give them better care. My last two were from a rescue group. no problems. up to date on everything. Also, they are more flexible with exchanging your cat for another, if they don't get along. A kitten costs 100.00 but that includes all of the above. adults are 70.

We don't have any no kill rescue groups in my city.

Hmmm, i can understand how you feel. We don't have any nearby no kill shelters, and that's why I have two new baby's. Try asking around people who are looking for good homes for their kitties. many times you can find a wonderful additon to your family.

There is a vaccine for panleukopenia (feline distemper) that I'm sure most shelter cats would have gotten. So I changed my mind. Why not adopt another? Just make sure he's had his shots.

I also desperately want another cat or four, but I know I cannot afford it and don't have the space. So I am going to volunteer instead at a no-kill cats-only shelter (a nice one, with mostly floor cats unless they're aggressive). This will quench my need to rescue every cat in sight and also help them out!

You would be very very surprised at the number of rescues around that you've just never heard of. There are so many people out there doing small ones out of their home, or tiny little shelters tucked away.

Start with something like this:
http://www.adoptananimal.ca/index.php
Sometimes the easiest way to find them is to look at animals being rehomed, and who by, and then find rescues that aren't in the phone book or what have you.

If you lived closer, I have 6 --- 3 1/2 to 4 week old orphan kittens that will be looking for WONDERFUL homes in a few weeks.

I say take the chance on loving another cat/kitten also.

Maybe you could visit the same shelter that JC came from. They know he died of distemper. Do they vaccinate their cats? If so, perhaps you could look for a cat that is UTD on shots?

I agree with everyone - go for it! You can't worry about something like that...I would say do your research and make sure the one you're looking at is all set with shots and medical stuff.
