Sorry, but I've got yet another post & yet another question!

Here's the shortest version of this story I can manage.

Damita & Chico have had loose bloody stools for going on 3 months now. We've tried: EVO, Iams, Nutro, & Chicken Soup. We finally settled on Chicken Soup. Then I was told I had to feed them Science Diet i/d to help with the stools. After the stress levels went down to zero & they had been on the i/d for 1 month, I began switching them to Chicken Soup adult food. Now, after several weeks, I am seeing loose bloody stools. The odd part? Some are loose & bloody & other aren't. Damita & Chico are both having some normal stools & some loose stools. A half dozen stools samples have been analyzed.

Damita is also suffering from hairballs & I am tired of being bitten in the process of forcing hairball meds down her throat, so last night I purchased an 8 lb. bag of Purina ONE Hairball Formula. It came with a free scratcher that Chico loves, but I digress.
Between the two, they were eating 1 cup of food a day, at this point, it was 3/4 Chicken Soup & 1/4 i/d. I was sick & tired of the loose stools, so I quit feeding both chicken soup & i/d last night & switched them over to all ONE. So far today, they have eaten 1 cup. I just gave them another 1/2 cup. This could be "Yay! New food!" or it could be that they will eat more. I just scooped 30 mintues ago. The poops are much more solid than before, & smell much better than before.

It weired me out when I opened the bag of ONE & the food was so yellow, though. What causes the food to be so yellow, corn?

Thoughts on this? Alternative foods that would be easy on the stomach & reasonalby cheap(provided someone adopts them)? I considered Eukanuba Hairball, but I have to find out costs & figure price difference. Which would be better Eukanuba or ONE(I have yet to compare ingredients on the two)?

Do you have access to Solid gold or California natural???

You have some tummy issues and both of those are reasonable $$ and decent with hairballs...
One usually is about what Eukanuba is ... I will check

I don't have a specific answer to your questions but I do have some input on Purina One.
This is the only dry food we allow our bengals to eat and it consists of about 10 to 20% of their daily diet. The other percentage is raw.
We've tried nearly every dry food on the market and Purina One has been the only food that they ALL enjoy eating and that doesn't cause any gastric problems. The ingredient list is pretty good for a dry food available at most grocery stores.
I've been consistantly happy with this dry food in moderation for our cats and it is the dry food I recommend to our kitten buyers who are leary of going the raw food route.

I'll start with this. Yes, I have access to Solid Gold. I can ask my pet store guy to order Cal Nat as he carries EVO already... At this point, I cannot afford to get either. I had not realized how much Ophelia's vet bills were going to cost me.
Basically, I am saving as much money as I can because I don't know how much more she will be costing me(I will hopefully know Fri or Sat). To add to that, the shelter says I need a food that isn't too tough to find just in case Damita & Chico get adopted(it's a long shot that they will). However, if I find one that works, I am willing to supply the adopters with at least 2 weeks worth of food to transition to a new one.

"After reading both hairball formulas I like neither at all.... Can you get anything else??"

Lemme see...the pet store carries....Purina, Pro Plan, Iams, Eukanuba, Solid Gold(no hairball in stock, tho), RC, Nutro, Diamond, Chicken Soup, Science Diet, Felidae, & Innova EVO. The Felidae was a no go, not even the cats outside would eat it. I don't like the $$ of RC for the ingredients. EVO causes loose stools & sort of defeats the purpose.
Nutro didn't sit well(puke). However, Mr. Pet Store man will try to order anything I'd like.
I am actually his best customer...so he would jump over the moon for me.

I have some Solid Gold katz-n-flocken I bought for Twitch & Lily, but they don't really like it. I mix 50/50 EVO & Katz-n-flocken for them(to make the EVO go farther). I can try some for Damita & Chico, though(I bought a 15 lb bag).

Kai Bengals, I am glad to hear ONE works so well for your bengals.
I have been having such a tough time trying to find a food that they like that doesn't cause digestive issues.

I can't get the hairball formula for 2 weeks.
He said it takes much longer to get Solid Gold foods than other brands. The RC costs me big $$$ & I'd rather not feed it b/c of that right now(It's almost as expensive as EVO).

They had trouble with the chicken soup. Here's the ingredient's list for that.
Chicken, Salmon, chicken meal, whole grain brown rice, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), oatmeal, whole grain white rice, potatoes, cracked pearled barley, millet, turkey, duck, flaxseed, natural chicken flavor, salt, choline chloride, chicory root extract, dl-methionine, potassium chloride, taurine, carrots, peas, apples, dried skim milk, kelp, cranberry powder, rosemary, parsley flake. Vitamins and minerals.

They did good on the Science Diet i/d. Here's the ingredient's list for that.
Chicken By-Product Meal, Brewers Rice, Corn Gluten Meal, Ground Whole Grain Corn, Pork Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), Soy Fiber, Dried Egg Product, Dried Chicken, Potassium Chloride, Chicken Liver Flavor, Calcium Sulfate, Choline Chloride, Iodized Salt, Natural Flavor, preserved with BHT and BHA, minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), Taurine, vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement).

So far, they are doing good on the Purina ONE. Here's the ingredient's list for that.
Brewers rice, poultry by-product meal, corn gluten meal, chicken, soybean meal, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), wheat flour, fish meal, non-fat yogurt, whole grain corn, soy lecithin, powdered cellulose, malt extract, soybean hulls, brewers dried yeast, phosphoric acid, animal digest, potassium chloride, calcium carbonate, tetra sodium pyrophosphate, salt, choline chloride, Vitamin E supplement, taurine, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, manganese sulfate, niacin, Vitamin A supplement, copper sulfate, calcium pantothenate, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin supplement, Vitamin B-12 supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid, Vitamin D-3 supplement, calcium iodate, biotin, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), sodium selenite.

They did good on the two foods containing by-products, corn, soy & wheat??
How does that work?? Or maybe it was just one ingredient in the Chicken Soup that didn't work for them?? I'm so confused!!

One more question...How soon will I know if the hairball formual food is working?? Damita's coughing like she has a hairball tonight, but I just started her on the food last night.

Thanks a million for so much help sharky!

My guess would be the veggies / fruit and milk and the duck ... duck being likely then the milk...

hairballs Zoey stopped within a few days but I would think a week or two after the change
