Odd Petfinder Find...Would you adopt this pet?

Thread Starter
I was browsing petfinder and stumbled across this pet ad:

http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/...?petid=6422538

and wondered what the likelyhood of this carniverous lizard being adopted out to a good residential home would be. Would you adopt him? Do you feel that he should be adopted out to a residential home? Why or why not?

Uh. I don't know if I even believe the ad is real. a)it says to call at weird hours of the day, and that they don't have long distance so probably won't call you back unless you actually live in Saginaw and b) I do not believe that anyone has seven gators in their basement. If they were running a rescue for them, they would have all kinds of contacts with zoos and sanctuaries and such, and they wouldn't need to put a free ad in petfinder.

I almost think this is a practical joke to wake someone up early/late.

Assuming it is true, no I do not think anyone should adopt an alligator if their idea of habitat is in the basement. If they have acreage, and a well-fenced off area designed for gators, then yes, but that would likely be in Florida, not Michigan.

Oh, and the phone number is either unlisted or a cell. It is actually in Saginaw though.

They run a "sanctuary"...
Pets on Parade Inc. Exotic Animal Rescue and Rehab

They may be just new and starting up...They only have four animals listed.

It may not be a practical joke. Its no different than owning a large carnivorous snake really....He's likely pretty docile with regular feedings.

I wouldn't adopt him with cats around though!

I didn't notice that! I'm such a skeptic

I agree, not around kitties! It says that's why the two cats are up for adoption, because they live in the basement with "Shredder". I still don't think gators belong in a basement in Saginaw though. Hopefully a bigger sanctuary down south somewhere will take him.
I don't know what to think about that....but I most certainly do not want one!!

"He will pretty mcuh eat anything, live or fresh." Hmmm...does that mean a home without young children? What aobut cats & dogs? IMO, this is not a pet for a city, it is a pet for a sanctuary where it can live in a somewhat natural habitat, not a house.

How has he not eaten the cats also living in the basement??
I find it kind of suspicious that they don't even tell you what species it is and that the only care information they give is that he will "will eat pretty much anything, live or fresh"

that one and the giant turtoise should probably be cared for only by professionals.
thats one thing I would not get.
I get weirded out when people post pictures of exotic animals and make you think that it's going to be like taking care of a cat. This animal needs someone who is totally specialized in reptiles to take it and love it, and to be honest, I don't think that those people would go on petfinder.

Also, how do you house train an alligator?
I was wondering about the house trained part too... This animal is not suited as a house pet ... I would like to see the tortise though as many species arent hard too care for just need the knowledge and the willingness...

And notice this.....Both of these Cats are up for adoption. They are wonderful Cats. They were rescue kittys when they were young. However they were not abused. They are both fixed males. They are both named Biscuit. Big Biscuit is 5 years old. Little Biscuit is 4 years old. They are eating Iams kitten and cat food. So why are they up for adoption? They are living in my basement with a few other critters. They are happy but I just want better for them being that they are friendly and would do well in a home environment.

OMG WITH THE GATOR? Someone PLEASE call aspca or something?!

and they don't know the sex of the turtle? thought they are professionals?
uhhh..maybe it's a close up of the lizard? I wouldn't adopt him, but it's an exotic animal sanctuary and I guess lizards/alligators are exotic I am not a big fan of reptiles.
I dunno about that and certainly not responsible to have cats living with gators.
I wouldn't adopt him, and I don't think he could be properly cared for in an average home, not to mention being way too dangerous to have around.

Someone probably found him in a pet store when he was a baby and thought it would be cute to have an alligator as a pet.
I think he should only be adopted out to someone with a lot of experiene with exotics- who understands that they are wild animals - NOT "wonderful pets". He should only go to a home that is prepared for his special needs such as food, shelter, and has the appropriate permits to adopt him.

My guess is that someone ended up with pets they didn't want, so they declared themselves a sancuary so they could post on petfinder.

Here is the very sparse web page!
http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/MI62.html

Here are the 4 pets avail...
http://search.petfinder.com/shelterS...sort=&preview=

The e-mail addy is petsgone4ever@yahoo.com!

What kind of sanctuary has a turtle, two cats, an alligator and a dove!?!

I would not like an alligator for a pet. As for it living with cats, I'm guessing it is in some kind of tank, so the cats can stay away from it.

Thanks for posting about this. I have never seen anything like it at Petfinder!

Yikes! I don't think so
Not in a million years. Even if I lived in a swamp, with The Crocodile Hunter as my volunteer and professional trainer.

If this is legit, I find it irresponsible for PetFinder to even oblige this listing...there is not enough info. It basically looks like most anyone could call the "sanctuary" (and a basement is not a sanctuary for exotics...pond or not), and arrange to adopt the gator...absolutely frightening. The gator would have a better quality of life in it's natural environment...in a swamp or in some kind of wildlife refuge...not in captivity as someone's indoor (or even in an outdoor enclosure) "pet." Ugh. I'm just hoping it's a joke.

Look at the e mail address! Someone call The Croc hunter! He'd love this "bloak"!

Good job, Becky, you're so thorough! I guess I have an um....cat/dog/teenager sanctuary (seriously, my daughter's friend has been staying with us for 5 of the past 6 weeks!)

But...if you notice, it DOES say "this animal is housebroken" What the...???

Can you imagine this thing being paper trained?

I really don't think this can be legit. An Alligator living in the basement with 2 cats and a turtle?

I've heard of drug sellers posting hidden messages in classified before. There typically isn't much information given and it would be an ad that drug buyers would recognize. I'm not saying this is one, but it seems really fishy. I think someone from PetFinder should call this number and figure things out.

i came home with one of those once, when i was 15. Was baby, for 39.95. at the pet store. My mother made me take it back to pet store. So i took it back, exchanged it for a Tarantula.
lets just say that also did not make my mother very happy

And I thought me bringing home a cottonmouth snake was bad!
My mother is STILL mad at me for that!

I'm guessing here, but likely it wouldn't matter what was apparently being advertized. There would be keywords and phrases chosen specifically so that they would appear to the average reader as perfectly unremarkable, but to the "interested" eye would jump out.

Whether that's what's going on or not, who knows? It certainly seems to be a somewhat bizarre offering for Petfinder. And, no, I'm not about to adopt.
Yeah, I get that part..I just want to know how Lunasmom knows that this particular ad contains a message that a drug buyer would recognize...What does she know??

To be honest, I have never heard of hiding drug messages in obscure classified ads. It seems like alot of work to me.

Ok, this is the first time I've been allowed to post in IMO - go me, but I have been reading it.

In response to DixieDarlin's post, several days ago, I contacted a Michigan Branch of the SPCA, and directed their attention to the ad. So far, I have not heard anything back; if I do I will let everyone know.

I found out from a previous co-worker that use to work at one of the major newspapers around here. She said that they have a department of people that scan through the classifieds of the paper looking for ads that stand out.

It got brought up because the publishing company we worked for we were all laughing because there was an ad that said "Shoes, $5. Call ###-###-####" We called the number, but never got a phone call back.

Also the Masters program I'm going into talks about Terrorists on the internet. What Rupunzel47 said is true. There are usually hidden messages in pictures that only certain parties would know about, but tells the site of the next bombing (in terrorism) or in drug sellers maybe when the next shipment comes in.

If you want to read a book that makes you think twice about the internet, read "Terror on the Internet" by Weinman (sorry don't know the first name).

Good for you Satai for calling the michigan ASPCA!

Ahhhh. Ok, I was imagining low level dealers doing this and it seemed strange...
I suppose it would make sense if the big guys were doing it.....

(and I meant to say "How would she know? not What does she know?" above..It seemed kind of rude when I re-read it! )

I could see the Terrorist link as communication would be a major obstacle.
Drug dealers not so much but Terrorists yes...I can see that...
