I have a cat who was a stray I took in about 3 weeks ago. She just had kittens 4 days ago. Shes acting really strange. Panting like crazy. She also started bleeding this morning. I'm worried. Am I worring over nothing?

A little bit of post-partum bleeding is normal. (A few drops here and there.) I don't think the panting is normal. Do you know if she delivered all the placentas. She could have a retained placenta or even a retained fetus. I'm sure someone with more knowledge will be along to help you shortly.

I wonder if an increase in bleeding and panting means she is trying to deliver another kitten. Please call your vet immediately, just in case. This is just a forum, with advice...any possibly urgent issue should be handled by the vet.

She delivered 6 kittens and six placentas. She has been doing the panting on and off since she had them and I thought it was probably normal. It has been pretty hot here. The bleeding started this morning and there was a pool of it about the size of a half dollar on my bed where she came and laid next to me this morning. If she is sick is it safe for the kittens to nurse or will they get sick.

As mentioned before, I would call the vet (at least get them on the phone, even if you can't take her in right away). The bleeding doesn't sound too excessive. As far as the kittens nursing, and I am not an expert, but this sounds like a "female issue" and it probably won't hurt them.

If she is trying to deliver another kitten will it survive or is it to late after the birth of the other ones.

Does she seem to be pushing at all?!? One thing I remember from my delivering my 4 kids and breastfeeding, is that nursing can cause some uterine contractions that could cause a bit more bleeding. That is actually a good thing, because although the immediate effect is some bleeding, the long term effect is the uterus returning to its pre-preggers shape quicker.

Even if you can't get to the vet immediately, please call them for phone advice. Even if it is a new kitty they haven't seen, if you have an ongoing relationship with the vet, they should be able to advise you what to watch for.

If Momma seems overheated, can you put a fan in the room, not blowing on the kittens, but in another direction. Also some ice in her water bowl might be appreciated.

It sounds like a very small amount of blood (but with blood, no matter how small, it always looks simply huge!!) and unless she is otherwise displaying signs of distress, all sounds about right - HOWEVER - as others have advised, it would be best to at least call in to your vet to speak with a professional just in case. They may have a different interpretation having the benefit of actually speaking to you personally than we do here on the Forum with not as much to go on.

As for keeping cool, one of the best suggestions given to me years ago was this: Get one of those big plastic soda bottles, fill it with water and freeze it. When frozen, take it out and place it on a waterproof surface (I wrap mine with a layer of paper towels to catch the condensation off the surface of the bottle) where you can position a fan to blow on it - it helps to cool the air.
