My two like to roll around in the plastic bags.

The thing they really get excited about is the celophane tape that sometimes comes on packages, if we get a package I have to make sure all the tape is quickly disposed of or there's a kitty munching party

Needless to say, I prefer the paper tape.

Sometimes my cats lick bags too. Especially the really glossy ones. I had heard a while back (I think on this site) that many plastic bags contain fish oil. Not sure where that came from but that's what I heard!

Woden one of my three is the only plastic licker in the house. Nothing like wakeing up to the sound of something getting the once over at 3 am.

The primary reason for the licking is the celluloid material that the bags are made of also poloroids and many other items, come from a cat not being wheened properly as a kitten. They still have the urge for the certain type of malactic acid that is present im momma's milk. Its ingrained in them like suckling their mamma's Teet.:woohoo
I don't know about that claim, LOL.(the one I bolded) Four of my cats were born and raised in this house with their mother cat, who is still with them here. They were weaned very gradually and naturally, by her. Even at a year and a half, they all love licking plastic bags.

The correlation of the products being similar to mama's milk is interesting though. But I don't think improper weaning has much to do with it, at least from my observations and experiences.

My oldest cat who now lives with my Mom LOVES to lick the bags from grocery stores, she will do it non stop unless you take them out of her reach. And my youngest kitten Lovebug loves to lay on them and lick them. He freaks out if I don't put a bag on the floor when I come home from the store so he can lay on it.

I think most cats are have their obsessions ... we have four cats ...

Alex (a neutered male) licks telephone cords
Tobbie (another neutered male) licks plastic bags
Tessie (a spayed female) is nuts over the adhesive on certain types of tape
and Carina (another spayed female) is bonkers over plastic straws and will pull them right out the drink glasses if she can get to them.

Each of them has a different fixation and they are all totally nuts about whatever it is that catches their fancy. We love them all and find this all quite amusing except I do get tired of hiding handset cords in drawers and protecting my drink from the marauding straw hunter.

mine are the same way! they LOVE when i come home from Wal-Mart,lol.

also, my male thinks bags are to knead for hours, then pee on!! the dirty lil rat. so i only let him have it for like 5 min, then it goes away, lol

Her Majesty likes to get in them and take naps she puts her head through the handle and will walk around with it on. At first I took them off of her because I thought she did it by accident and then she kept doing it. I do keep an eye on her so she doesn't suffocate herself, but she will walk around with it on and lay down in it, then when she is done she will get out of it on her own. Really weird, but good to know other kittys like them too.

Onyx will try to eat plastic...when he is eating...right now I am force feeding him back from hepatic lipodosis so he doesn't even try to eat bags now.
My other two love to nap on them and play with them...with supervision of course...

My cat loves to lick all plastic and vinyl - plastic bags, the shower curtain liner, everything. Also loves to chew on rubber bands. I absolutely am hypervigilant to keep all plastic (and rubber bands) away from him. He would probably chew the plastic bag if he had a chance.

I just read that most plastic bags are made with cornstarch and some cats really love corn. i have a cat that licks the plastic bags and the metal window screen so I was thinking she was really weird or had some kind of mineral deficiency but now I think it's just the corn. i have pampas grass growing directly outside the window where she licks the screen; i think she is licking the chaffe that comes off the grass, akin to corn.

I have a cat smokie who LOVES anything plastic. If I open the bathroom closet and he finds the cotton balls bag he'll lick and just keep licking. I have to pull him away. But than again he's just a licker in general. He licks me and my fiance. He'll lick our feet, arms, hair lol

I have one cat JR, who wants to constantly lick my CD-Rs I have a pile on my desk that I'm going through because I don't remember what's on them. He wants to lick those all the time. He also loves licking me too he'll sit there and try to lick my hands while I'm trying to type lol

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one with the weird bag licker cats LOL

YES, our Annie and Vivian both lick the plastic grocery bags and I wondered what that was all about, lol Now I know! I too thought it was just a quirky thing they both did.

One of my cats loves licking plastic!
There's so many of them perhaps they should form a support group - 'Plastic Lickers Anonymous'

my cat licks the shower curtain, the plastic around the toilet paper, plastic trash bags and the grocery bags. your reason sounds right to me. He was not weened properly. thanks for clearing that up. lucky for me he does not play with or eat the plastic.

No, but Max has a fetish for bubble wrap - he dribbles on it and likes to pop it.  I suspect it's the mouth feel he goes for.  Personally I discovered that wringing it was very satisfying!
