I have domestic short haired kitten that I received from Animal Control on Sunday. Yesterday I noticed that he was sneezing and acting a lil bit standoffish...I took him back to animal control and the vet told me that the kitten has an upper respiratory infection & they gave me Amoxil to give him 2 times a day for 14 days

My main concerns are:

-is that medicine really gonna work? I've never heard of giving that to cats
-what can I do to make sure my kitten is comfortable
-im noticing that he sticks his paws in his water when he drinks and now his neck seems to be damp after he drinks...what's that all about?
-he is still eating but not as much...how can I make up for the nutrients he's not eating
-should I take him to another vet for a second opinion?

Thanx for all advice

If this medicine doesn't work then I have been using the wrong thing for years now. Sometimes the virus is stubborn and the vet will prescribe Clavamox or in extreme cases Baytril

There is a product called Little Noses that you can use to put in his nose before he eats, so he can smell his food and not lose his appetite. Also invest in a baby vaporizer and plug it in the room he sleeps in at night.

He is a kitten and may not like still water. Consider buying a Drinkwell fountain for him, cats love running water-

He isn't eating because likely he can't smell. The drops I mentioned above will help him to clear his passages- just use one drop in each nostril, he will sneeze, then wipe his nose, and give him one more drop in each nostril.

Sadly, because of crowded conditions and policies at most shelters URI are normal. Your kitten would benefit from you finding another vet at another time not now. Because visiting the shelter vet will again expose your kitten to the containments in the air. A private clinic will afford you better protection.

Thanks for rescuing this little one-

I volunteer at a shelter & we have a URI spreading like wildfire. I know how sad it is to watch those poor baby kittens.

We give them stinky canned food to make sure they are eating. We have quite a bit of Meow Mix Market Selects cups that were donated to us & have found they work well.

Other than that, I don't really have any advice. I hope your baby gets well soon!

Try taking a good hot shower and taking the kitty in the bathroom with you (but not into the shower) The steam might help her feel better. Poor little thing! I know how pitiful it is. Prego gets them occassionally.

When I picked up my new kitten he had a slightly runny eye and sneezed 10 times a day. His nose had a little blockafe. The vet put him on Amoxicillon and eye drops and he was fine in 10 days.

My latest kitten was also sneezing a lot and stuffed up pretty bad. I talked with my vet whom I have more respect for everytime I talk with them and they said that in my case antibiotics would be a waste. A l ot of URI's are viral just like our colds and antibiotics do nothing for viral infections. If you kitten doesn't have a colored discharge when they sneeze that it's a viral infection. Bacterial infections result in yellow/green mucas. A lot of vets like a lot of doctors just prescribe antibiotics to make themselves and you feel like you are doing something. This oversubscription leads to weakened immune systems, resistant bacteria, and also kills a lot of the benificial bacteria in your cats digestive system. It's best to ask your vet if the infection is mostly likely viral or bacterial and let them know you don't need a prescription just to think you're doing something good.

Most viral URI's clear up in 7 to 10 days.
