So I'm sitting here reading TCS this morning, and all of a sudden I hear this weird noise coming from my bathroom, like someone is fiddling with the security gate on my window (the bathroom window opens onto the fire escape). I jump up and run in there (probably not the smartest move--good thing it wasn't a crazy guy with a gun or something) and there is this big fat SQUIRREL chewing a hole through my screen. He is so engrossed in what he is doing, he doesn't even notice Nathan standing there on the corner of the sink getting ready to leap onto the window sill. So I put my arm around Nathan to keep him from jumping (the sill is way too narrow for him, that leap would only have ended badly...) and I yell at the squirrel, "Shoo!" Well, the squirrel pauses, looks at me...and goes right back to chewing through my screen! The nerve of him!
Now I'm getting indignant. So I yell, "Hey you!" The squirrel looks at me again, but this time he notices Nathan, who is straining to get to him and has this like, "Let me at 'em" look on his face. And the squirrel actually looked like he stopped and thought about whether to run away. It was like he was thinking, "Well, let's see, I'm a pretty big squirrel, maybe I could take that cat."
So I loosened my grip on Nathan a little and he kind of stretched his neck forward and the squirrel I guess decided it wasn't worth it, because he took off. Good grief! He was like Super Squirrel or something! He chewed like a 2 1/2 inch hole in my window screen! I shut the window right away after the squirrel ran.

All I can say is, thank god this happened today and not tomorrow--we are going away for a few days, and if there had been no one here, that squirrel would have chewed a hole big enough to come in, and I shudder to think...

I guess the squirrels are pretty bad-a$$ in Queens!
Good thing you were there - he would chewed an excape route for the cats while you're away.

Wow, that must have been a massive squirrel!

Good thing you were home to stop him from getting in, or for Nathan to get out

Sounds like a real tough guy!

Southern squirrels are very small, and Fred loved chasing them. Then we moved to Missouri, and the squirrels there are huge. the first day I let Fred out to explore the yard, the first thing he did was go after a squirrel. The squirrel was nearly as big as he was, and it stood up and hissed at him. Poor Fred didn't know what to do. He stood there for a few seconds, mouth open, eyes like saucers, then slunk away. I don't think he ever chased another squirrel as long as he lived.

I don't think Nathan would have gotten out, because I have one of those criss-cross security gates on the window, and I think Nathan would have been a little too big to fit through the openings. But the squirrel definitely could have come in, and if there had been a kitty vs. squirrel brawl, things would have been bad.

We do have some pretty gutsy squirrels around here. My mom and dad used to have a big tree outside the kitchen window of their apartment, and when they were out this squirrel would climb in through the window and pee on their stove and climb back out again. It took a while for them to figure out what it was.

Poor Fred!

We have squirrels all over the place here, but like you said they are small. I can't imagine seeing gigantic squirrels running around! On any given morning I can look outside and count 5-10 squirrels running around my yard. Do you guys have that many of them up north?

oh poor Fred! That must've been a blow to his kitty ego.
Those squirrels are so darn chasable though, I can't blame cats & dogs for wanting to.

This is cracking me up!!
One year we went to Niagara Falls on vacation and there are black squirrels up there, and I'd never seen a black squirrel before, so it kinda freaked me out... and then one chased me down the sidewalk!! Never thought I'd be that scared of a little furry animal

Cheeky little devils certainly are not backward about coming forward, are they?
I think they're sweet.

Oh me too Hope--as long as they stay outside.
I tell you what, when I walked into my bathroom and saw that mouth full of little pointy teeth chomping through my screen...

I can laugh about it, but it would have been really awful if I had been out and the squirrel had gotten into the apartment and gotten in a fight with the kitties. I'm sure my babies would have been injured, and I don't think the squirrel would have fared too well either.

Our neighbor feeds the squirrels, and they tore a hole in his patio screen to get to his nuts...........
