I saw a quail in my yard a few days ago, then last night I saw it again. (Or saw another one!) Here is a link to a pick of a quail...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Quail

The one I saw was more vivid colors...black on the head with white stripes. And more brownish in the body, less white. It was like a tiny chicken...and wasn't really afraid! Anyone else with wildlife in their area?!?

You saw a Bobwhite ****. <---- lol filter! a male Bobwhite
I love quail.
We get Common, Bobwhite and California quail around here.

The California quail are the ones with the feather on their head, the one almost all cartoon with quail in them mimic.

I did take a pic the first time...but it was so far away you couldn't see it, even when I zoomed the pic! LOL!

So Arlyn, my little chicken is a little rooster?!? I should have known because it was quite attractive. But so chickenish...I just assumed it was a girl!

I'll bring my camera out when I go outside...maybe I can get a better pic!

Yeah, girlie Bobwhites are just brown, only the boys have the striking white stripes.

Don't read the narrative about it though...good for training my hunting dog indeed! (I'm not antihunting, but when I see a little birdie in my yard, I don't think of it as prey or meat!)

We had a hen turkey and her brood cross the highway (with help from a neighbor who stopped traffic) into our backyard about a month ago. I missed it (darn back injury) but sis saw it. I have seen more wild turkey this year than ever before.

We also have had bobwhites (I once got between two in our neighborhood and started interrupting their "conversation" by mimicking them. ) We have a golf course up the road called Quail Crossing. (I say the quail are cross because of the humans moving in!
)

Also deer, fox, coyote, turtles (there's a section of road north of me that needs a turtle crossing sign), and further back in the woods near the stripper pits are beaver and bobcats (probably as cute as Amber, Boris, and Nakoma, but no where near as tame!)
