Hello

For those of you with cats like this, cats that will smack another cat in the face if they even look at them funny! Cats that will hiss at another cat from across the room then run across the room and wack the other cat in the butt for NO APARENT reason! How did you introduce another cat in the house??

IS a kitten really a better choice ??? WOuldnt this type of cat torment bully a kitten so bad and distroy its total childhood/kittenhood? MAny people claim that a kitten is better for introductions but an adult cat can at least defend itself while a kitten cant!

ANyone have any experience?

I guess my first question would be, why do you want to introduce another cat into the house? It doesn't sound like either the new cat or your present cat is likely to be particularly happy about the arrangement.

Spaz only has that 'tude' if she thinks someone is watching.
She actually does play with and groom the other cats.
BUT she also is the one that takes the longest to come to terms with interlopers in her territory.

I have no advice to offer, since Princess Callie is the only 'cat' in the household. She reigns supreme.

My calico Gizmo tolerates the babies more than the adults. I guess she figures they can not help getting in her way.

My tortie is pretty mellow by tortie standards but she will get a wild hair now and then.

My tabby-tortie hates everyone. She hisses and swats at all who enter her domain. I have noticed lately though that although she hisses at the babies most of the time she will forget what a crab she is and look as though she is going to play with them. She has not actually done it yet but I think a break though is near.

So I guess mt best suggestion is if you get a new cat to get a kitten or a young cat that still runs around and plays like an idiot. It sort of distracts the "grumbs" from being too grumby and reminds them they are cats and they might like to play.

I have four cats, two of which are calicos - Molly (about 11) who is a dilute calico, and reigns over our house with an iron paw and a cross look, and Sláine (2 y/o), who is a total doll and at the bottom of our somewhat flat hierarchy.

Molly's 'tude is accepted by all as royal perogative, and Sláine is surprisingly 'tude-free for a calico. Maybe your calico just has to be alpha, in which case you might want to specifically seek a kitty that is happy to 'respect her authority'.

"So is it that you want a companion for your male since he can't be buddies with your calico? I'm not trying to be a pain, I'm just trying to get a sense of the situation."

No actually I just want a cat because i like cats and enjoy keeping them as pets i dont know why thats so hard to understand...

Java doesn't have any attitude - actually, i'm thinking she's lowest on the totem pole. Cable, my tabby, is the attitude queen! didn't really notice it much 'till Chip joined us, & she's getting better with him, but she'll still sometimes hiss or whack him for no reason i can see

Politics is about perception, and cats, like people, are political animals.

I can't give advice on this, as my dilute torbie has been accepting of other cats/kittens and will usually be seen playing with them very shortly after meeting. She only hisses if they do it first, and would rather run than fight.

I have a calico with lots of tortitude. We also have a little tuxedo girl. We have, on several occasions, brought in a third cat as foster until we could find it a home (that's how I got Puppy!). Fosters have been:

* female dilute longhair calico kitten, 6 months. (Diamond)
* male blue bicolor, 5 years. (Bebar) Tom when we found him.
* male red tabby, 2 years. (Jingles) Tom when we found him, severe dog bites.
* three newborn kittens. Had to be bottle fed. We did not allow Patches near them.
* male cameo bicolor, 1 year. (Puppy!). Declawed and neutered when we found him.

Patches treated all the cats the same. She walked up to them, hissed, whacked them a few times, and then proceeded to ignore them. That usually got the message through. After that, she would only attack if they did something dumb (like attempt to play or cuddle with her). Diamond and Bebar learned to avoid her very fast. Jingles kept wanting to play with Patches, but he seemed to avoid her rebutals pretty well (fast reflexes!). Puppy was a bit of a problem because he's completely oblivious, so he kept doing things like running into Patches and then getting confused when she whacked him.

I think a younger cat is better. Patches has the most problems with Princess simply because Princess keeps trying to usurp her authority. It doesn't matter that they've lived together for 16 years, they still duke it out weekly. They're too close to the same age.

Get a cat that's young, alert, has claws (for defense), and has lived as "bottom cat" before. I don't know what your situation is, but you can also get two kittens so they entertain each other and don't pester the older calico.

My Spaz is the same way and she is a calico. She is the Queen of the my 14 kittys and her brother Oreo (a tuxedo) is the king.

Ripley is a tortico (solid white patches among the brindled tortoiseshell patterns), and is QUEEN. She absolutely rules Fergus and Captain Steuben. She does, however, accept newcomers fairly well, as long as they mind their manners. If not, she has a tendency to become rather HOSTILE.

I thought Rosie would have taken to Sophie straight away with her being a kitten, but not only did she hiss and growl at Sophie she did it with me as well, and still does if i go to "gently" move her along from in front of the pc, but after a couple of weeks they had both bonded brilliantly, but if Sophie over steps the mark she'll get a faint growl and a bat from Rosie to put her in her place, then the next time you see them they'll be grooming each other

Molly does tend to take the longest to accept newbies! She can get quite annoyed and irritated at times, but she knows to stay away from anyone or anything she doesn't really like the look of.

She had a lot of issues with Willow when he arrived and can have moments here and there, but she has taken pretty well to Annie - although they won't play or anything!

We have four cats.. three of those four are calicos.. and one of those three is a kitten. Our kitten will get along with any of our cats, and our male gets along with her and our older calicos.. but our older two won't get along with each other, or the kitten.. especially the kitten. They'll see her walking into the room, and start hissing/growling, and then they'll run away. If they stay long enough for her to get close, they'll try to hit her in the face a few times, and then they'll leave. Right now we aren't having any luck with those three (calicos) getting along, so I'm hoping we will. We've been trying to introduce them slowly.
