Hello everyone! I just had an experience which may be helpful to others and wanted to share.

I had posted several times about my cat, Puppy, and his sudden behavioral problems. He meowed at night (at the walls), he was ridiculously hyperactive, and he had hallucinations.

Everyone here gave standard behavioral advice. When I called the vet, he was completely not helpful. So, we had been bearing with it. I finally typed in "feline mental disorder" into Google one night, and came up with feline hyperesthesia syndrome. So, I made a vet appointment for this.

Thankfully, they gave us a different vet who knew about FHS. She also knew a lot about other diseases that have similar symptoms. Bloodwork came back clean, so most of those were ruled out. Except allergies. She put him on Predisone.

We have now had three whole days of happy, sleepy kitty! When we got him, he was a lazy boy who slept for 18 hours a day. For the last 3 months, he's been sleeping less than 8 hours a day. On day three, we were out all day and only played with him for 30 minutes when we got come. He slept soundly that night regardless. We used to play with him 4 hours a day (HARD playing), and he'd still stay awake all night long. The day before meds, he had 4 bouts of crazies that lasted several minutes each. He was so freaked that he ran into me and acted like something was chasing him. Since the allergy meds, no crazies! Just our peaceful Puppy getting into normal kitty trouble (like the laundry and my computer cables!)

The vet says he could be allergic to any of the following: corn, soy, rice, beef, chicken, or lamb. His food has no corn or soy, but it does have rice, chicken, and beef. So now we have to figure out what he suddenly got allergic to. The true test will be if he goes back to crazy mode when we wean him off the meds.

Anyway, I had no idea that an ALLERGY could cause behavioral problems and no physical problems. Maybe this will be helpful for someone else!

He could also be allergic to some additive in his food, depending on what you buy and what's in it ('taurine' is supposed to be in cat food [for their eyes]) or to something else in the house... any animal (inc'g us) can be allergic to just about anything on the planet, so it may take some time to figure out what's doing it, and if more than one irritant is at work (he may be like some people - sensitive to a few things) but you will and at least you know it's 'fixable', and won't do permanent damage.

Hmmm....that's interesting info. Thanks for sharing. I was thinking about naming Twinkee Puppy because he's always wagging his tail.

Now that you mention it, that makes total sense! If they are itchy/scratchy from food allergies, they be irritable and act out as you described. I've had the same type of reaction from a drug allergy.

Thanks for sharing this with us!

I'm so glad you've worked out what the problem is! As you know, in Jamie's case the main culprit was soy. If Puppy's food has rice, chicken, and beef, the likeliest candidate would be beef, based on what I've read about food allergies, so that might be where to start eliminating. Did your vet suggest an allergy diet, like venison and green pea?

Hi, I'm not sure why you think beef would be the main culprit, at least as many people are allergic to chicken, though usually only to rice if they have a gluten problem (or is rice gluten free?). The only way to find out is to eliminate foods one by one, and to pay attn. to environmental things you might otherwise never consider (like someone having bought something or other recently with a different smell, or a new carpet - they can give off chemical odors for months, etc.).

Actually, the vet suggested fish as a more safe diet. His main food is actually very good (Drs Foster and Smith), but it's chicken and brown rice. His wet food is just Friskies. I ordered Eagle Pack Turkey food to replace the Friskies, but didn't realize until I got it that ingredients 3 + 4 are chicken! We'll see. I think we'll feed him all wet for a while to rule out the rice first. If that doesn't work, we'll remove the chicken.

Oh, and a rice allergy and a gluten allergy (wheat) are different. I have friends that are allergic to wheat. People can be allergic to rice too, but I believe sometimes it happens if they were fed rice formula as a baby. I think that's one of the reasons rice formula is an absolute last resort, usually if the baby is lactose intolerant.

could you possibly link me to the FHS sites you found? i searched in google but only found one page of info about it, and i want to have more info to take to my vet. a lot of the symptoms on the page i found sound like Wontons, and i'm wondering if he might have it.

The reason I suspect beef is that I participate in a number of (international) cat forums, including some that deal exclusively with EGC and hyperactivity/hyperthesia, and subscribe to a couple of cat magazines, and the question of beef allergies comes up again and again. The OP and I have exchanged PMs about our experiences, and we seem to be going through the same thing I have been for the past seven years. Your question is certainly valid, but there is some background you're unaware of, such as the fact that my cat won't eat poultry, so that can be ruled out as an allergan. I'm not trying to bedevil beef - Jamie actually does best on a diet of organic beef and natural rice (Ökmed), but the OP might need to know that beef disagrees with a lot of cats.
