I have not read through every post here but all I can saw is USE SEA SALT TO SOAK YOUR PIERCINGS!! That is what I use, with most anything else you have to worry about what exactly the ingredients are of what you are putting on your piercing. I have my septum pierced, I had my nipples pierced until just recently and my boyfriend has his septum and his lip pierced twice. I also have 0 gauge ear holes and I have only had problems with the nipples (the reason I took them out) and one of the ear holes after I dyed my hair, I got dye in it and it got infected and I had to take it out and start over. I am soon going to be getting a surface piercing as well as my Tragus done again and I will always use Sea Salt Soaks to clean them!!

I had my nostril pierced before there were body piercing shops in my area - the only ones around were in major cities like Vancouver and Toronto - so my nose was done with a gun. Blah.

Back then with the gun, they shot the regular stud in there with the backer and all and I was told the same thing as with ears, use peroxide and turn with polysporin.

THINGS ARE SO MUCH BETTER NOW!

You should only wear surgical grade steel in your piercings, you should have a ring for at least 6 weeks and you should soak in in warm sea salt water to draw out infection and wash regularly with Dial soap.

I know a lot of body piercers and a heck of a lot of people, including myself, with piercings ... just be faithful with your cleaning and it will be fine.

Sorry I ahven't replied in awhile

It's healing up nicely.. I have been soaking it in saltwater twice a day.

I tlaked to a piercer about it, and they said it was a Keliod (I think thats what he called it) that it is just scar tissue, that it happens sometimes in piercings.

I also put a little buit of a heavy antibiotc cream on the bump, but not on the piercing itself..

The bump is nearly gone now.. and it feels better overall. (Even though I have weird visions that it rips out of my nose, very paranoid about that)

Welll, it's back. Bigger than before.. more sore than before.. and it gre in remarkable time... from a small lump to a huge one in less than 24 hours.

I am continuing with the salt water soaks, even though it's quite painful now to even apply a little bit of pressure on it.

I really don't want to have to take this out.. not after I had been wanting one for three years, and I finally got up the guts to get it.

Are you of African, Hispanic, or Asian descent? It is rare to find keloids on anyone that is not. Caucasians seldom keloid, and almost exclusively in the ears. It seems the darker the pigment in the skin, the more likely to keloid. Even lighter skinned people of African descent do not usually get them as the darker toned people. I researched it and could not really find a good reason. They are usually confined to the earlobes, shoulders, upper arms, and sternum. What you have is likely a cyst, and will eventually go away. They have been known to come back several times during healing. Once it is healed, it will probably not come back.
I worked my way through massage therapy as a body piercer, after apprenticing for a year, and working at it for 3-4 more. I still do it on a limited basis. If you have not done so already, you should change the screw to a ring. You will be amazed at the difference in healing times. In may cases, it will be less painful, and it will always be easier to care for. I pierced a friend, against my better judgement, with a screw, and she had nothing but problems for months. I finally talked her in to letting me put a small ring in it, and it healed right up. Mine was done with a ring, and it was completely healed in 4 weeks. I never had a minute's trouble with it.

Would it be fine if I put one of my surgical steel (one of the few metals I can wear) earrings in it? I currently have them in my ears but I can put some studs in my ears and use the ring on my nose.. it clips fully and can twist all the way around in my ear, and it pops open and shut.

Or should I go find one that is used for a nose? That would have to wait though as I don't have any money currently.

The problem with that is the wire may be too small and the hole may shrink. If the wire is not much smaller that the screw, or if it was very temporary, it would probably be ok.

It looks to be about the same size, if not a little bigger.. but not smaller.

I'd jsut be afraid of changing it.. and not being able to get it in.

You may want to try putting it in from the inside if you can, even enlist some help. That way you can see to close it on the outside. Since you have had it for a little while, it shouldn't close up right away while you are changing it. It shold not be as hard as getting a screw in there. That takes some practice.

Urg. Don't put an earing in it! If the piercing is sore, you may be having a minor reaction to the jewelry or an infection. Yes, people can react to stainless steel. I suggest you go back to your piercer and have them take a look at it. The jewelry quality may not be good as they told you it was. I suggest using a titanium nose screw. Titanium has the smalliest chance that your piercing will have a reation.

P.S. I was horrified reading through this thread at how misinformed people are about the care of piercings!

I am not misinformed. A SS earring is not the best thing you can put in it, but neither is any kind of screw in a problematic piercing. A titanium ring might be good if SS is not doing well for you. The SS ring earring was meant to be a very temporary last resort.
That reaction you are talking about is contact dermatitis, and can happen with any metal your body dies not react well to. I have had clients that do fine with any kind of crappy jewelry (not recommended) and some that have had a reaction to titanium.
Yes, there has been some terribly outdated advice, but people get that from piercers that do not keep up with what new thing has been proven better that the last old thing. When I had my nostril pierced almost 20 years ago, Betadine and Bacitracin was the next good thing. Now no one uses it because other stuff has been proven to be better. Piercers did not recommend salt soaks, which is still the best care you can give a piercing. Titanium body jewelry was not in common use, and we did just fine. Nobody pierced with screws, and nostril piercings healed much better, even with the dated healing methods. I have never had anyone I pierced with a ring come back with any problems except the dreaded bump, which anyone can get. People that insisted on being pierced with screws routinely have problems.

krazykat, I wasn't directing my post to you at all, although I didn't realize you did body piercing until I just now read your profile. I was just surprised at some of the advice. I realize most of it used to be the norm but it's just really outdated. I do know that what everyone suggested was just what they knew and everyone was just giving the advice they knew and thought would help her. From what I had read, noone had mentioned the possiblity of her jewelry not being good quality (except for whoever suggested sterling silver). I realize titanium can still cause a reation, but it's the one metal that's most likely not to do that. I suggested it because I do have minor reation to stainless and I do much better with titatium in my unhealed piercings, though after they're healed, it's fine.

The only thing I used on my facial piercings was Dove anti-bacterial face wash or my shampoo when I took a shower. I only used sea salt after I got my tongue done. I've healed just fine and found out I'm allergic to titanium.

First off, make a gentle saline solution (salt water), or buy one at the tattoo parlor or drug store-The tattoo parlors sell a "spray" on saline solution- it's cool and easier to use. But if you want to go the cheaper route- just boil some salt water and store it in containers- pour a little bit in a dixie cup, heat it up in a little dixie cup in a microwave, and just let it run over the piercing before you wash it- this will loosen up any dirt and debris- it doesn't sting at all, and it will promote healing. Next you need to wash the piercing- However- don't use dial!!! Scented soaps can irritate a piercing site. Get some "Provon"- it is an antibacterial soap that many many tattoo/piercing shops recommend. It is the best stuff on the market in my opinion! Wash with it 2x a day- any more and you can overdry the skin in that area- you only want to try out the keloid. Next, i recommend buying some Tea Tree Oil -it's an essential oil you can buy at most health food stores.....put a tiny- and i mean tiny drop of it on a tissue- you can even dilute it with water...and after you clean it with an antibacterial soap like Provon, apply it to the piercing site. It may sting a little- but i promise it's not bad- it will clean the keloid and nostril area and aid it in the healing process. Also, taking 500 milligrams of Zinc a day will also promote your body's healing time- and with a nostril piercing, you'll need that. Those take a while to heal up completely. I had a few keloid issues- to the point where i thought i would just take out my piercing for good....then out of the blue- it healed up completely and i had no more problems! Don't give up yet- i know those keloids hurt- but they go away- i promise!
DANG! I couldn't agree more! The whole time I was reading this thread I was thinking "Why hasn't anyone mentioned a Keloid and Tea Tree oil!?"

I definetely agree with StarryEyedTiger- she is right. Although, rather than making my own saline solution I just went to the store and bought the cheapest saline solution/contact solution I could find, and it comes in a convenient bottle that squirts! I got a piercing done by one of the top guys in the state (and the country according to him and a few other people I've talked to lol) and that's what he recommended I use to clean it. I never had any problems either and it's in a sensitive area. As for the keloid- I never had one but a friend of mine did. She tried everything and it just kept getting bigger & more painful. Then she finally talked to the same guy that did my piercing and he told her Tea Tree oil- I don't remember how long it took it to clear up but I do know it was pretty fast. As far as I know she hasn't had any problems since!

Good luck and I think the most important thing you could try right now is the Tea Tree oil!

If you use Tea tree Oil, please be careful, it is toxic to cats. I know you probably already know this, but someone new reading these posts might not.

Yeah, I joined a body piercing forum the other day(9th? 10th?), and they also reccomended the tea tree oil. I didn't know it was lethal to cats, so thanks for letting me know. I won't be buying it then.. the saltwater soaks have been working quite nicely and the bump is almost gone again.

They also said that the problem is probably from me fiddling with it alot. I love to turn it and play with it.. so I just gotta stop doing that except for once or twice a day. It's already been hard.. I go to play with it and have to remind myself to leave it alone.

Okay.. about a week and a half, if not two weeks ago, my screw came out while I was sleepings. (probably caught in in my fingrnail or something,, it hurt like holy moly.. eesh.) Anyway, I couldn't get the screw back in.. I was just making it hurt to the point of tears and making it bleed.. so I put an earring in it until I could figure out was to do with it.

Well... only a few days after the earring was in, the bump went away completely on it's own... so I don't know if it was the metal, or the shape, or what that was causing it.. but I haven't had a problem with it since. So now I'm going to stick to the straight noserings, not the stupid screws.
