I am frustrated as all heck. I just planted 3 small Heuchera plants that my mother gave me, only to go outside the next day and find them all gone. Normally - one would say - so what - that's sometimes what happens with plants. They get eaten. Well, here's my dilema 1) Heuchera is deer deterant and since I live in downtown, it wouldn't be deer anyways 2) as I just said - I"m in the middle of downtown! 3) My mother lives on 10 acres in the woods with every creature known to man and her's have never been touched 4) I went on a garden tour this weekend across 2 states (8 gardens) and nobody else has this problem or can even guess what it might be.
Whatever took it obviously really likes the taste of it too cause the first night, all the plants were gone with the dirt only a little scratched up (meaning I think the roots were still there). So I covered the dirt back up with mulch and today I look out and the dirt and mulch are all scratched up again. Still not deep enough to get to the roots, but very obviously after the Heuchera because the 3 dirt spots were in the exact location it use to be.
I want to plant more, but am a bit hesitant for obvious reasons.
Does anyone know what eats this plant? One thought was skunks because I do have a lot of those and my mother doesn't remember the last time she smelled one at her house, but wouldn't at least one of those 8 other gardens I saw have a problem? Also, one of the gardens is down the street from me (same street!) and they have ton's of Heucheras - no problems.

Well I do landscaping for a living and this is a puzzler.
I wouldn't say that deer don't eat them cause if they are hungry emough they will eat most anything. What about rabbits??? Or the only other thing is that there is something tasty underneath and animal was trying to get at that. I get skunk and raccoon damage in my yard as they will tear up parts of the lawn looking for grubs but its a bit too early in the summer for them to do that. I can ask some of my gardening friends to see what they think.
I live in "the country" and have several cultivars of heuchera some just planted a couple of weeks ago and other that suffering from the heat they are ok.

Arrrgggg! This is what I mean! You're a garden expert and I've stumped you! What the heck?

The thing about deer is that I don't have any even remotely close to my home. I live basically downtown. Not a big city, but street after street with very little woods none the less. Rabbits I haven't seen, but I guess it's possible. We do have a huge problem with skunks. My neighbor has captured and relocated two families between our yards over the past few weeks and I still smell them every night.
As for them looking for something underneath it - it's possible if it's a bug or something they're looking for, but it can't be a plant cause I have never planted anything in this spot before. Also, if they were searching for bugs, it seem strange that they hit the exact 3 spots where these plants were and if it was a bug, I know it didn't come from my mothers cause she would have problems too.

And then there's the fact that they came back again after the plants were gone to dig more!

If you could ask - I would appreciate it. Mostly cause I"m baffled (and so is my mom who has been gardening for many years). It's driving us nuts!
Thanks!

I think I might be able to help. Heucheras are extrmely popular up here. In coastal or northern cliamtes they tolerate full sun, and grow very well with little or no babysitting - low water, too. We have coral ones, big, dark purple ones - gorgeous! The Weevil is the biggest pest they have. Ask your nursery for Weevil killer. Over-watering and keeping it too moist causes mildew and attracts all kinds of weevils!

I think it could also be skunks. Do you notice any cone shaped indentations in the soil around where they were?

I had to google heuchera to see what they were.
I have some of those in my yard also. I am going to vote for rabbit or skunk. The skunks have definitely been digging in my gardens. I have seen the indentations mentioned above. As far as rabbits, I have a few families of rabbits that live in my yard, and they don't bother my plants. It is more built up where my mother lives, and they are chewing up her whole garden. It could be because it's slim pickings around her, and that is all there is to chew on

Thanks for the help guys. I do have tons of skunks! and, yes there are small cone shaped indentations. Nothing really deep though (I don't think they got the roots). I have not seen any rabbits around us, but it's entirely possible. As for a Weevil....I don't know what that is
, so not sure if I have them..
I'll have to look that one up.
Sashacat - I'm so jealous that you are able to keep so many of these! Some of the colors are brilliant and the ones I lost were a beautiful purple.
I won't take a chance planting any again this year, but next year I'll look into how to protect them before I plant.
Darn little creatures!
