I wanted to run this across all you fellow cat lovers out there. When we first got Missy the previous owners said they had been feeding her Indoor Blend dry cat food.

I went to the store right after getting her and saw that it was for adult cats. I got her some dry kitten chow, as well as some Whiskas Cat Milk. She didn't eat much at first, being a shy kitten and all, but now she eats just fine.

In addition to her dry food, we also give her a little whiskas tuna, and of course water is always on hand next to her dry food.

I'm going to call the vet Friday and schedule her first appointment
I want to make sure she's doing okay as well as get her papers fixed up and everything.

I agree - the level of food is not very good quality. Also a wet diet is better for your cat/kitten with a small amount of dry food for snacking on between meals. Your kitty should also have kitten food until it is between 10 months to 1 year depending on how well (fat or skinny) it is doing on the kitten food.

Just curious, what is usually a good weight to know when to switch to adult food? Is it just if they're gaining too much weight at ten or so months, so you switch?

That's pretty much it - just keep an eye on them and if they start getting "chubby" then you could switch over. Don't forget though that as kittens they'll go through stages of chubby and then leaning out. Some folks say you should feed kitten food for a year - others will say only a few months. I personally feel better about the year (and 10 months if they are doing well) since they are in their biggest growth period then. We put Bijou on adult food at 10 months because he was getting to be a big boy. Mika however was on kitten food for a year as she was and is still tiny and she eats more than Bijou.

Oh man, I thought I was feeding her better than that.
I want to get some insight from our vet.

Be careful about taking nutrition advice from a vet...they don't know much more than the average person, and they will most likely push Science Diet which is NOT a high quality food. Just be open minded!

I agree with the above. Not many vets know much about nutrition except what the salesman drops off to them. Science Diet may be fine if your kitty is having health issues and needs to be on a special diet, but if your kitty is healthy you are better off finding a good cat food with no by-products.
