Pudge has been on a diet of mainly Felidae wet and raw chicken wings(once or twice) a week for a few months now, and I have a question for other people who feed mainly wet food: How much does your cat eat of it in a sitting?

I've found that at 6.5 lbs (normal weight), Pudge will only eat about 2.5 heaping teaspoons of it in one sitting. She has it twice a day, does not act hungry in between feeding times and has not lost any weight.

It was not a sudden change, she just gradually ate less and less and seems to have plateaued at that amount. Once every few days, she doesn't eat all of that either. Based on your personal experiences, is this normal?

(She runs up and chows down at mealtime, so it's not as if she doesn't like it either.)

Forgot to mention that I feed 13.2 oz cans (and teaspoons have varying sizes...d'oh!). The amount is about a third of a can a day (a little less). The "teaspoons" I use are baby spoons which are about 2/3 the size of the teaspoons. According to daily recommendation, it should last 2? days and it lasts 3.

I was wondering the same thing about wet food - I feed Astrid wet food in the morning when I get up (around 5:30 AM - which is when she gets me up) and again when I get home from work at 5:30 PM. I am getting the 3 oz. cans and I was trying to feed her half in the morning and the rest after work. However, she will literally only eat 2 teaspoons max at each feeding. And it takes her awhile - she won't eat it all at once. I was told to feed her the whole can. If I did that I would be throwing most of it out.

She does have a bowl of dry Nutro Max Kitten/Pet Promise to munch on during the day while I am at work and at night. She does nibble throughout the day and night and goes thru about 1/2 a cup. I am considering gradually reducing the dry food to see if she will eat more of her wet food because I think it is better for her in the long run.

Still, it doesn't seem like enough to me. How much should an nine month kitten be eating? The vet said she weighed 8 lbs - but I doubt that-(they weighed her in a large carrier and subtracted the carrier weight.) I think it is closer to 6...maybe. She is a small cat. 3 oz of wet food a day doesn't seem like much to me.

that seems okay .,.. it would about 4 ounces a day which yes by the directions is a bit low but I beleive many cats dont eat that much Yosemites dont ... Kandie ate 6-10 ounces a day and she is about 11 lbs .... Zoey eats only an ounce with dry

My two cats usually share two 5.5 ounce cans of Natural Balance each day, so in theory approximately 5.5 per cat. In reality, Odo eats more of it than Willow does. I do leave some dry out, but they don't eat much of it. If your cat is eating until full and isn't losing weight, I wouldn't worry about it. Different cats have different nutritional requirements, just like people.

I agree, if your kitty is healthy and not losing weight than he's eating enough. I had always had larger dogs before and these two are my first cats. I kept thinking they weren't eating enough when actually they were. They are just going to eat a lot less food than I was used to a pet eating.

Jaffa eats 2 100g pouches of wet food a day, plus about 15g dry. He's quite a large cat though (5.5kg).

My 16 wk old kitten eats half of a 3 oz can of Nutro in the morning and the other half at night. Throughout the day he eats Nutro Max Kitten dry food.

I get the feeling he would eat more of the canned if I put it out there. At almost 50 cents a can, he will have to get used to a can a day for now!

PS: He eats a little wet food, walks away, comes back, eats a little more, walks away --- does this for about 10 minutes and then it is gone.

One of the other things you will note is that if you are feeding a better quality of food, they actually will eat less. I feed Merrick (which here in Canada where I live is $1.69 per 5.5 ounce can). Bijou and Mika share one can a day with Royal Canin for Siamese dry (about 1/4 -1/2 cup) per day. Mika actually prefers dry over wet and Bijou prefers wet over dry so this works out well.
