It kills brain cells. It destroys your liver. It tends to make you do and say things you wouldn't ordinarily when sober. Why aren't people more incensed about Alcohal? I agree with you Hope. I grew up with an alcoholic father and I would take smoking over the alcohol any day. Not all people who smoke have health issues. My grandfather smoked a pack a day and drank a pint of whiskey a day until he died at 94.
I would love to quit smoking and have cut down to about 6 per day and still feel guilty for smoking - I will quit and in the near future. But, I don't believe all the hype about it either. I smoked during my pregnancy (the doctor told me it would be more harmful to the baby to try to quit and be stressed than to go to a milder cigarette which is what I did). Our daughter was one inch longer than normal and weighed almost 8 lbs. I was 110 lbs (when I got pregnant) and 5' 2" - I definitely would not have wanted her any bigger than that, thank you very much. She is very intelligent, is 5' 11" tall and has always been very healthy - no ear infections, no childhood diseases (in fact I sent her to play with our neighbor's little girl so she would get the measles and get it over with - she didn't get more than a couple spots), so I don't particularly buy that argument either.
If someone wants to prove a point badly enough, they can come up with lots of propaganda to support their claim - both pro and con.
IMO there is too much sterility in our lives now - we were never sick as kids and are pretty healthy adults and we ingested heaven knows what on the farm growing up. It builds the immune system whereas our younger ones today have a compromised immune system because they are over-protected from normal, everyday germs. OK - I'm jumping off the soapbox now.
But bottom line - for that kind of money you want to believe I'd take the job!
