I have a female rescue dog -- have had her almost a year. She's small, about 2 years old, curious about other dogs we see on her walks but she gets aggressive-defensive if the other dogs are too hyper. She follow me everywhere although she likes to play with the cats, but she can get over-excited and a bit rough with them. Anyone have any experience with rescue dogs? Should I get another little one to keep her company? I was thinking a docile mature dog, who wouldn't threaten her -- does this make sense? Would another female be better, or a male? (Neutered of course).

IF you were to get another dog, the opposite sex would be better.

As for getting another dog, it really depends if you can find a dog that gets on well with your dog and vise verse - there really is no simple yes or no answer here.

When you say your dog gets aggressive with other dogs are we talking full out attacks or verbal displays or what exactly?

I would suggest you contact a rescue in your area (I may be able to direct you to a reputable one if you tell me where you are located), anyway, contact a rescue in your area and talk to them honestly about your dog and see if they feel they can help you or not. You will for sure need a patient, laid back dog but I wouldn't advise getting another until an experienced rescue can assess the aggression in your current dog. It wouldn't be fair to a new dog to subject them to true aggression.

Hope that helps.
