Hi guys, its 1:49 am, and I just registered as a member at this site while browsing for advise on my cat. The night I came home from college, I was moving my tv through the front door when my cat (who we were told was spayed) got away. 5 days later she came back pregnanttt, and 2 months later we have our first kitten! We have her in our basement (unfinished =/) she has two beds down there both have 3-4 blankets and are in dim areas- she is in one of them right now, she gave birth to her first kitten at 1:17- and i guess im trying to get some advice on what the plan of action for the morning will be. She is extremely close to all of us and in fact wouldnt let me leave her side during labor. Once she had her first kitten (breath taking moment may i add), I came upstairs, Should I be down there with her for long periods of time, or leave her to her kittens? I really just want her to be comfortable so any advice will be greatly appreciated!! Thank you sooo much-

AWESOME! New BABIES! I cant wait to see them.
I think I would just be with her through the labor just in case she needs your help, most of the time they don't, but do what your heart tells you.
And Congrats

Welcome to TCS.....you may want to move her to a more confined location so she doesn't move the kittens around to a potentially unsafe location. Additionally.....are there any places that a kitten could get into a not get out of?? As they get older, the kittens will want to explore their area...so do consider a smaller location for her (like a bathroom). I realize this experience has been wonderful for you...but I would encourage you to make this your cat's only litter by confining her indoors only until the kittens are weaned and she can be safely spayed. If you enjoyed the experience...perhaps you can consider fostering a pregnant cat for a local rescue or shelter sometime in the future.

Thank you all for your responses!! Well.....She had 6 kittens, 2 black 3 grey and one tabby. she is a wonderful mother. They are so plump and happy and healthy I could not be any more thrilled then i am right now!! She is still in the same place she gave birth, we switched her blankets and put a clean bed down.//but we didnt touch them...we didnt want to make our cat feel threatened// In response to TNR1, there are many places where she could both move them or they could get into that could be potentially dangerous. She is in our unfinished basment, so I guess there are many things she could get into
. I would like to keep them in my bathroom but am not sure if that would work. we have a powder room on our main floor that maybe i could keep them in? I dont want them to be disrupted. I have a double closet with sliding doors, what about one side of that? Anyway...right now she and her babies are all very happy and comfortable so that is all that i can ask for. I would like to post a picture for you guys how do i do that? WELL i need to go see the little ones
Im in love. Thank you ALL for the advice,
Nicci

Nicci...glad it all worked out well and she is taking care of her kittens. I see you used the "confused" smiley....let me explain more about the confinement idea. Certainly there are dangers that she could get into in other rooms...but a large unfinished basement not only gives her a lot of room to move her kittens...when her kittens get larger, they will try to explore the entire space. I have also found that smaller rooms actually help with litterbox training.

Again....the most important thing is that she is kept strictly indoors only until the kittens are weaned and she can be safely spayed.
