Well, today my mother and I were giving my cat some water when we noticed patches of extremely thin and transparent hair on her front legs. She is a dark-gray tabby, thick hair, and slightly senile (9 years). She is fed Purina 1- salmon and tuna catfood and is given water from the refrigerator usually, ( water is twice filtered) although sometimes she gets water from the sink, (water is filtered only once)... we have well water, not tap. She does not go outside (or at least, not usually- sometimes she escapes) She uses Fresh Step litter, but she won't pee in the litterbox recently... she pees on towels, and in sinks. However, she poos in the litterbox regularly. One of my two cats threw up everywhere this morning... however, I haven't noticed any weight loss in Cuddles, the cat in question. She is no more lazy or listless than usual, or at least not noticably.... I haven't seen any signs of anal, optic, or nasal discharge.... the only real symptom I have are spots of very thinned hair on her legs. What could this be??

At age 9 and "somewhat senile" Cuddles is ripe for a CBC, a complete blood count and senior panel. They will check red/white blood cells which will indicate any presence of infections, viral influences, and/or "intruders in the body". She also should get her T4-(Thyroid) checked, even though she isn't experiencing traditional symptoms. Her thyroid might be low, hence the thinning of hair. Her peeing elsewhere is a certain indication she has something amiss. It could be as simple as UTI. But do get her in for a check up.

Thank you, sashacat! I will be sure to get her to the veterinarian A.S.A.P. I also have another question- would UTI cause any pain? I haven't noticed any real signs of extreme pain... but is that one of its symptoms? Also, would it cause her to throw up? she definately hasn't lost her appetite, seeing as how she ate the regurgitated food- however, I don't really know if it was her that threw up in the first place...

Well, I am no expert on UTI's. My kitties have rarely, if ever, had them. Change water daily, no plastic bowls (they are porus and hold bacteria). But yes, they can be painful, just as if a bladder or urinary tract infrection can be for humans, no doubt. The longer it goes unchecked, it will cause issues.
Throwing up could be a side effect, if it was even hers....nerves...stress.
Best to get her in ASAP.
Cats are experts at hiding stress.
