I brought a new dishwasher and it was delivered yesterday. When I opened the door the delivery man stood there with a horrified look on his face and asked me if I had cats. (I guess I'm not as clean as I thought I was if he could pick up the cats odor from outside the door). When I told him I did he said he was allergic to cats and if he had know he would have sent someone else. He came on in and asked me where the cats were. I told him they always hid under the couch when I had company. He asked me to sit between him and the couch while he was setting up the dishwasher in case one of the cats came out. The whole time his eyes kept darting to the couch.
I don't think this man was allergic to cats, I think he was just scared of them and it was all I could do to keep from laughing.

Oh wow that is hilarious. My cat tries to play and or get pet by any and all delivery people. She fell asleep in the cable guy's lap.

Yea, I agree with you, he was afraid and not allergic. If someone was that allergic they'd have been having a reaction while they were there!

My downstairs neighbor came up once, and his gf (who lives across the hall) knocked on the door asking for him, found him with Zissou in his arms, and literally jumped a mile in the air, ran down the stairs screaming. Zissou continued sleeping. It was nuts! I've never seen anyone that afraid of cats.

I am that afraid of dogs though. There were some strays once in Michigan, and my mom and I were found on top of a big boulder clinging to each other in fear! I plan how I walk around the houses with dogs. So I guess I kind of understand his feelings. Weird though! You'd think a delivery person would be able to be near a cat for five minutes, with the number of people who have cats and all. That's like a letter carrier being afraid of dogs. Ours carries treats in her pocket.

I'm sure if you have this fear, it's quite real, but if a big repair man came in our house afraid of my girls, especially considering their disappearing act at the very thought of a stranger coming in, I know I would laugh right to his face!
What a silly man!

That's a hoot! I can picture him trying to install the dishwasher with one eye on the cats.

I hear about so many people that are terrified of Siamese cats and I can't help but laugh because Bijou and Mika are so laid back and friendly.

Speaking of dogs though, we visited some folks this afternoon that had a gorgeous Husky. This dog was soooo beautiful and he kept talking to me (howling and making yippy sounds). Every time I said something to him he would try to talk back to me. It was so much fun. His owner says he hasn't talked that much before. I think we bonded.

I agree with you about Siamese. My Siamese are all so sweet, especially my Rainbow Bridge boy Snoopy, who never met a person he didn't love. SunLee is a bit more reserved with strangers, but she's very loving to new people when she gets to know them. Shane is afraid of all strangers, and will hide until they leave. However, none of my cats Siamese or Bengal's alike are mean to people.

The maintenance man for our complex is afraid of all animals. In fact, he refused to do work on our dishwasher unless either DH or I were home.

Poor guy!

Like Steph said, though, a phobia is a phobia. I suppose if I came in someone's house, and I saw, say, rats running around, I would run out screaming as well. Maybe that's how this poor guy feels around cats?

That being said, though, lots of people have cats, so I think that a job where you go into people's homes is probably not the best fit for him.

Awww, the poor guy
Think of all the purrs, back massages & headbutts he misses out on....Being afraid of animals is soo sad.
My sis had a Siamese "Mr. Chings" who was MEAN!! So many people were afraid of him, including me! he'd attack out of the blue
His brother "Chen Li" was such a sweetheart - we couldn't figure it out. Chings would attack dogs & loved to be out on a tether in the front yard, just hoping for a new dog to come into the yard. A dog never made the same mistake twice

Hahaha.

Last summer one of my sisters friends was living with us because she was having some famly problems. And she was terrified of cats. And we had 4 at the time, plus 2 foster kittens. It was hilarious at first becausse she wouldn't even sit on the couch if a cat was sitting there. And her eyes would follow them as they would walk past her.
But by the time she left, about 3 weeks later, she was picking up the kittens and cuddling them, and scritching the adult cats behind their ears.

in a pile of open toed shoes!
That poor guy would've had a heart attack at my house! LuckyGirl is the mayor of Munchkin Land... she has to run to the door whenever she hears the knob turning or even a knock or the doorbell. She is the welcoming committee, and is in charge of promptly sniffing everyone that comes in. And if you pass her sniff test you get the seal of approval when she rolls over onto her back and shows you her belly for you to rub it.
And she's a fast sniffer too, it's funny to watch, she'll keep moving her head all around you, jump up on the couch to get a better sniff, then back to the floor to re-sniff your shoes... Hubby & I joke that she's thinking: "hmmm, what a we got here? Who are you? Where ya from? What's going on here??? What are you all about???"

We had a guy come look at our fridge today(MR. Frigidaire died yesterday
). He wasn't the least bit afraid of the two dogs, 50 & 90 lbs., who had their hackles up & were snarling in rage(the rescue dog has some issues with repairmen & the other one learned from her). They walked right up to him & he walked up to them...no problem(they wouldn't hurt him, they may help him carry the fridge out, though!). He saw Twitch & freaked out! He is superstitious, but of white cats, not black ones! When he comes back to replace a part, he is sending someone else!
I didn't have the heart to tell him that I have another white cat, either!

I'm sort of scared of dogs.. big ones don't bother me as much as little ones do though. I am so freaked out at pet smart..

i'm also scared of babies :0 At least it's cute when someone is scared of a cat.. When I have to leave the room because a baby is in it people think I'm evil!!
