Hello

For the last lil while I have been thinking of getting another cat. Currently I have 2 cats which are great.

But i just dont know if its a good idea or not? Ok the thing is I have never really been able to "choose" my cat before ALL the cats Ive had have been cats in need that i took in because they needed me they are great pets but ive always wanted to have a cat (or a few) that i actually got to choose!

Ive always had a dream of owning a large solid black muscular male cat ive never had a black cat and ive ALWAYS wanted 1, of course personality is very important i mean i would want a friendly cat also, but i have an extreme love for all cats but BLACK cats have always fasincated me more then anything! every time i see one i want it LOL

I went to the humane society yesterday and I saw a cat that fit my description hes amazing the exact kind of cat ive always wanted and hes only a year old!
I Can afford another cat (easy) and time is not an issue either.

Here is my problem

1. I am going away on vacation in a few weeks. I have been on vacation many times before never had a problem cats alre always looked after but these cats have all adapted well to each other and this place Im thinking leaving a new cat at home in the care of someone else while on vacation is not a good idea since no one knows my animals better then me.

2. I have 2 cats one is aamazing and sweet the other isa calico shes amazing to people but shes a WITCH to other cats!@! She treats the other cat like total crap she acts like shes the queen of the world and will wack him if he even looks at her funny. He on the other hand could care less about her and hes adapted to living with her easy and knows how to handle her and keep her crazy/fiestyness under control. hes just such a calm experienced cat he can do this but i dont know if another cat could deal with her? Ive NEver had a cat like her before@! those of you who have calicos or torties with attatitude im sure can relate they really are something!

3. I have many pet birds ducks chickens pigeons that share my yard garden and woods with my cats everyone lives in total peace my current cats totally respect them sometimes the birds and cats will throw there own lil parties in the bushes lol The birds have become sooo confortable around my cats they will walk inches away from the cats face and my cats like the birds also and they treat the birds MUCH better then they treat each other but i dont know how this big black tom cat would react to the birds?

I was thinking of waiting till i got back from my trip when things are a little more stable to bring in a new cat but im sure he will be adopted by then
do you think it would be hard to find another dream cat just like him? I dont know what to do i keep thinking about him i played with him in the cat room for almost about half an hour hes so amazing! I was holding him for like 10 mins and my arms got sore because he was so HEAVY but he loved being held! ahhh i dont know what to do

I think if you have balance in the home, you should leave things as is. Especially if you have plans to go away because a new cat disrupts everything, and I mean everything. (trust me, I have 19 at the moment).

As for your dream cat, there will be time in the future for another one to come along. Unless you are available to monitor the system 24/7 for at least the first 2 weeks, adding a new cat can become troublesome.

If you have been considering another cat, then the time may be right - for you at least, not necessarily your other cats. However, the big guy may provide more companionship for your other male. Since you are leaving for vacation, you might hold off getting your new black cat; it will be easier if you can be there to help all the adjustments be made. But talk to the shelter workers; if the cat is in a kill-shelter, then by all means, bring him home & realize that you may have a bit more to deal with.
And remember to have plenty of boxes located in different places throughout the house. Ditto for food/water bowls. it does minimize the territorial disputes.
please keep us updated! Susan

I've always wanted a mediumhaired black cat too. I love them. Something about the way they look is just gorgeous. I'd postpone the dream until later (I know I am...lol), as a vacation right after adoption isn't the best idea (missing out on excellent bonding time), and you don't want to risk upsetting the balance then leaving.

The shelters often have two-for-one specials for adult cats in August (kitten season).

I think the best recourse right now is to wait.
