We adopted a kitty from a shelter after we moved into our new place that allowed pets. He had been declawed by previous owners, and was relinquished because he developed litterbox issues after they got a new puppy (was fine before that).

He developed a UTI in the shelter apparently that might not be fully treated, and we're working on that, and waiting for the urinalysis to go through (the shelter didn't have a lot of money to spend on vet care apparently, they didn't do a urinalysis when he started peeing blood, just gave him antibiotic shots.) But we're getting it taken care of, and watching to make sure he actually does go and doesn't develop a blockage. He's on Hills c/d just in case, to help prevent a blockage. No more blood.

How do we know? Because he's going on our couches. We can deal. Our couches were hand-me-downs and we didn't pay much for them at all. But we'd like to not have to buy new couches for awhile.

... after frutilessly using enzyme cleaners over and over again, and not noticing much of a difference, we'd like to at least not add any additional smell to the couches, and maybe give them a chance to work without having all the work undone by a fresh dousing.

Does anyone know where to purchase those old-fashioned plastic slipcovers? (I'm the only one who sits on our couches other than kitty, and I'll deal with the noise and sweatiness. We won't have any guests over anyway if our house starts smelling seriously like cat pee!)

The enzyme cleaners work IF you don't just wipe the surface, but more or less pour it over and let it sink in - obviously you just have to wait the designated time and then douse with water, and allow to dry. However, I think half the problem is litter related to her declawing, e.g. find the softest litter you can, then top it off with a little sample of her own pee and put her on top (not of the sample tho) and 'walk' her feet very gently once or twice in the litter so she understands what it's for. Make sure her feet have been checked by the vet to be in good shape first! No idea about the slipcovers, but how about this link... http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2....cid=44353&fp=F

I would try a search on ebay or even look on Craigslist maybe. Good luck, I hope he's urinating ceases once the UTI is cleared up.

When Demeter had her UTI, I was thinking along the same lines, and never was able to find the plastic slip covers. Soooo, I bought some of those cheap plastic drop cloths, like you put over carpet while painting a room. I covered the furniture with the plastic cloths, then put furniture throws over the plastic. If the plastic was to get torn or soiled, they were only about 27 cents to replace, and the throws were just put in the laundry every few days.

that's a great idea!
also, there's a special cat litter called cat attract that you can buy online to help in re-training him to use the box. just do a search for "cat attract" & it'll pop up. declawed cats evidently often have this problem - i've been lucky that none of mine have
[i have a rescue like you who was declawed when i got him.]
