Is this common behavior?

I used to have this cat, that just walked into our apartment one day. We had two other cats at the time. He just kind of seemed to adopt us. About a month or two later we move and took him with us. He'd come and go as he pleased. At first it would only be about a day, then it would be a week, then he'd show up every month or two. I knew he had to be eating somewhere because if anything he gained weight. As he was doing this, he would get REALLY mean when he'd come around. One time I picked him up to move him to a different room, because my daughter was about 7 months old at the time and I didn't want her to go near him, because I didn't know how'd he react towards her, especially if she decided to pull on him, and he wound up tearing a hole in my shirt with his claws. Eventually the cat stopped coming around. I was just wondering if this was common behavior with cats?

It is a common behavior for unaltered semi feral males which no one is caring for. It sounds like he was gradually becoming feral due to less and less human contact. Was he neutered and vaccinated and were you actually caring for him properly? I mean, if you are feeding a cat and letting it come to your home and when you move you take it with you, it is your cat and your responsibility. Where is this cat now?

I have no clue he just dissapeared one day. I have a feeling he did the same thing to some other person just walked into their home and addopted them. Like once he gets tired of one house he goes to the next.

It could be that as your daughter became older &more active, the cat felt less like being around. my 2nd grandson is up visiting, and is now 10 mos., and my cats are rethinking their previous adoration. He's much more vocal and of course, crawling & climbing, so the cats are now keeping their distance. It's as if there's an instintive "Yikes, a toddler!" catitude going off.
Also, I agree that the cat may have had poor social skills to begin with - his previous home probably didn't give him enough attention, etc. Poor guy, I hope that a good family takes him in....Farewell, restless one

Yea that could've been it. I was just a little curious. Although he would get agressive with me, when my daughter would make it to him, he never got agressive with her, he would usually just take off when he wanted her to leave him alone.
