One of the two vets I see just called, having had a consult with an internist today, reviewing the series of bun/creatinine and other values for Frankie since we took her in this past January.

They do feel it is early chronic renal disease.

I can just not afford an u/s right now - will do so as soon as we can to check the size/shape of the kidneys. For now, she goes in for a cystocentesis to check current urine specific gravity (and to do a culture and sensitivity if indicated), get a doppler blood pressure, and we are beginning her on Calcitriol, and keeping her on the senior diet I'd already put her on.

Shes fat, happy, my concern is that I think the longest I've heard of a cat living with this on the support list I joined when Patrick was diagnosed was 10 years, with 4-6 being awesome goals to reach.

Frankie is estimated between 2 and 3 years old. Too young for such a diagnosis.

I am upset.

You guys have been wonderful. But I sure wish someone had had something to say about this news re Frankie. My sweet marshmallow is going to have a shortened life, no matter what I do.

I am so sorry to hear about Frankie, she really is way too young to have something like this. I do hope that with your love and care, she gets the kind of lifespan Patrick did (his was longer than expected, wasn't it?). Fingers crossed that the tests show something that might help increase her lifespan.

Patrick was 15 when diagnosed, and made it almost a full 4 years from that point. This is what is hard for me...I think I remember 1 cat making it 10 years with crf on the support list, even if I can help Frankie achieve that, she'd just be 12-13. Wah. I am going to cry about this and then I'm going to stop and do the best I can for her for whatever number of years we have.

Ah Jennifer...I wish I hadn't been right with my niggling fears. I am going to hope that she pulls a "we've never seen that before!" and perhaps with future tests she won't progress and they might adjust their diagnosis. Surely her starvation and whatever else happend during her time on her own outside, may have done damage, that maybe I can reverse a bit??

I am hoping so. I will def. be taking you up on that offer, and talking to you via pm when I need to in the future. We love her so much, she's just precious, and has been a bit of a comfort with Patrick's passing. Not fair she should have what he had to deal with

Thank you...we will certainly do our best to make sure all years are full of love, treats, toys and tummy skritches (she loves to stretch on her side, roll onto her back and wave/paw the air with her front paws. She also does her best to scratch boxes with those poor (not by us) declawed front paws...gets such a look of "I'm being BAD" on her face.

Such a girl. I will get a current photo up - the side by side of the photos when we took her in and now, are astounding.

Pat, with your knowledge of and experience with CRF, she will probably have a much longer and more normal life with you than she otherwise would have.

Thank you. I keep telling myself she used up at least one of her lives during her time trying to survive on her own, we'll make this life as wonderful as we can.

Everything crossed that she is that one in 10 - it will still be a young age, but quality is more important than quantity, and with your care and knowledge, she will have a good life, however unfair it seems that she has to deal with this just as she gets the best home ever. Big hugs to you.
