Hi all. Has anyone had a problem when there cat got sick and the vet gave them Orbax to treat them???

about a year ago my cat Chett got sick with a cold, we took him to the vet and they gave him some pills (Orbax) to make him better and some food to eat to keep up his weight for he wasn't eating much of anything. Unfortunatly, things got worse and he got veryyyy!!! weak. He struggled to stand up by himself and he would only stay in the basement, which isn't the most comfortable place for a cat to be when it's sick. We brought him upstairs to try to get him to eat, we found that he was very cold, and he started to have seizures everyonce in a while, which became more numberous as the afternoon went on. We took him to the vet, to find out that it would cost them $800 to do some testing and to keep him over night & if the test wouldn't work they weren't sure he would make it over night, this causing us to put our beautiful lil boy chett down at the age of 7. I feel somehow the Orbax made him worse then he already was. So I am just wonder if any of your cats got sick and was told to use Orbax and had problems with it. Please let me know. I don't know if its the vets fault that my poor boy died.

Here are a few detailed descriptions of the drug:
http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Con...C=31&A=676&S=2
http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_orbifloxacin.html
http://www.pmprb-cepmb.gc.ca/english...p?x=435&mp=573

It's a broad-spectrum antibiotic, so if your cat had an allergy just like people can be allergic to antibiotics, it may have caused a reaction-- seizures are listed as a side effect. However, seizures are also a symptom of high or low temperature, various viral diseases, and other things that may not have been an infection or a reaction to the drug. I don't think the vet did anything wrong in prescribing it, but that's just my humble, non-veterinarian opinion. I know how very hard this loss must have been for you, but you may never find a definitive answer to what happened.

I know how you feel.
My cat Guido died suddenly b/c he had an allergic reaction to flea medicine. He laid out on the kitchen floor and grunted and moaned. I cried and cried.

My vet routinely prescribes Orbax for cats. I don't know of any adverse reactions to it, but I do know by doing some research that there is not a lot of clinical data to support use in cats for some things. Also it is a strong antibiotic, so may cause resistance to other antibiotics. I am sorry about your kitty, it's always hard to lose one when you don't know what was wrong.

So sorry about your kitty--it could have been a number of different things since he was sick before the medicine...

And DaMaz that is just beyond horrible. I can't imagine....

Big hugs to you both.

Im so sorry to hear about your cat, and I understand, my Egyptian Mau had a terrible reaction to Orbax. She has seizures and open mouthed panting. She also passed out twice and I thought for sure she was a goner! It was the most terrifying day and night for me, she is my baby! I decided to call vet and ask for some other type of antibiotic that is not so strong or has questionable side affects. I cant give it to her again, i wont risk it. She is an inside cat so contamination risk for other cat disease are low.

Unfortunately any medication can have serious side effects. My Alex had a shot of Baytril before she later died that day. I really don't know if it made it worse or not but she was already very bad off so who knows if that had anything to do with it. I didn't have money for a necropsy so I don't know but my vet suspects that she developed a pancreatic infection very quickly and that can kill anyone within hours really and that's what happened. So who knows. Alex had side effects to almost everything she took and they were bad too. Mirtazapine gave her seratonin syndrome, Flagyl gave her jaundice and she developed fatty liver. There were other things as well. She just couldn't win no matter what we did. I've seen many, many kitties with no issues to these drugs. I'm so sorry that happened. it's devastating.
