Anyone else has to suffer through a heat wave without air conditioning?

It's been very hot and humid here for days and there's no end in sight. Now, even the nights are way too hot to sleep. I don't know how much more I can take.

It wouldn't be so bad if I could just lie in bed and do nothing all weekend, but I really have homework to do.

Why isn't it Fall yet??

Is it possible for you to pack up your homework and take it somewhere else to work on it that has air conditioning, like a library or coffee shop? It's not as private or quiet, but it is cool!

That's what I was going to suggest too.

We only have a window air conditioner in the bedroom. The rest of the house is completely unbearable.

Wow.
I couldnt do it.
Definatly not. When you walk into our house, it's like the Artic Chill or something. It's amazing. I couldnt have it hot like that.
Hopefully things get better for you soon. I had no A/C one year, and thought I was going to sweat to death.
Drink lots of water, and like they said..Hit up the library. Or a community center for a while.

Yup, our new apartment is on the top floor and there's no air in this building. It's funny, this year there's a couple of tenants who've decided they can't take it anymore and have installed a/c. Personally, I'm more worried about my cats. I don't want to have to get an air conditioner and pay so much extra, especially when you only really need it a couple of months. I'm going to look up this U of W engineering students who came up with a home made a/c that was on the news.

I might go to the library a little later. For now, it has cooled down a bit and there's a thunderstorm comming.

Doesn't seem like it'll be the end of the heat wave but at least it's a little better for now.

I have the windows open and the fan blowing air through the apartment (it's cooler outside than inside right now) and I have a plastic container full of ice in front of the fan. I don't know how much that will help but I'm sure it wont hurt.

On bad days we just stay in the bedroom. Sadly at work right now our AC is out and I just have a fan at my desk that does nothin gmore than circulate hot air.

This thread reminded me of the story my mom told about one of her aunts. %This was back in the 1940s. The aunt was wondering why the electric bill was so high and then one day walked into her kitchen to see her hired help doing the ironing in front of the open refrigerator!

We are fortunate that we have A/C. We have central but something is wrong (again) so we have the 2 window units going.

Well, we've been having a heat wave here in Los Angeles, and I have no A/C. I have 4 fans facing me, keeping me fairly comfortable. I work the Graveyard Shift, and so I have to sleep during the day, when it's super hot. When I wake up, my bed and pillows are saturated. I am NOT a big fan of Summer.

Central A/C is very rare here, and you can't just install window units, because the windows aren't double hung or sliding. I've been leaving the windows and balcony doors open at night and in the early morning, and then closing them and the shutters to trap the cooler air inside during the day. That helps, plus large oscillating fans.

FINALLY, another Californian who is honest enough to admit that summer can suck!! Wildfires, brown-outs, insects and bugs galore; unless you're a surfer or a kid with a swimming pool in the back yard, summer can be the pits....at least up here in my part of the state, the nights are usually at least 30 degrees cooler,so sleep in possible.
I have NEVER endured the kind of heat I saw in michigan, once - not even in Tennessee. MI had this "lake-effect" humidity and 100 degrees - it was like living in a sauna... the hard surfaces outside were dripping, and the heat and moisture created such a SMELL
i couldn't sleep at night at some of the houses - fortunately, my MIL keeps her AC going full blast.
My sympathies for anyone in those hot, humid areas who doesn't have air conditioning!! I wish you all could come stay up here till your hotspells wane.

It has been sooo miserable here in the sunny South. I would think that I would be used to it after 47 years living in the heat and high humidity, but it just gets worse the older I get. If I stay outside for more than a few minutes, I get sick, often to the point of getting dizzy and throwing up.
We just had a huge thunderstorm, so it is a little better for a few hours at least. I feel so bad for those of you without air conditioning. My kitties have each staked out a floor vent and are laying on them.
I wish all of you suffering from the heat a lovely cool breeze this evening!

I'm sorry you can't enjoy the outdoors anymore! And thanks for the wishes for a cool breeze...we don't have any AC either. We bought window air units, but when dh was doing some remodelling and found out how poor our wiring is...we decided that it isn't safe to run the air conditioners until we rewire the house! So its lots of fans for us. And I can't foster newborn kittens due to the heat!

It can get bad here, but so it hasn't been horrible. I have central air in the apartment, but it comes along with a price the silly thing chugs along like a freight train. So I have to ask myself the question, do I want to get woken up every few hours while it "clicks" on, or do I use a fan?
