Good Morning everyone!

I am looking into pet health insurance.

Does anyone have it and which do they recommend?

I am looking online and there are a few to choose from. This is new for me but I feel like I should have some type of insurance because if god forbid something big happens I want to be able to financially provide the best healthcare for them.

But I am not sure which to choose.

Thanks!

I have VPI, the superior plan with the cancer rider, but not routine care coverage. I looked into several of them and it happened to be the best one for my cat and my situation.

Most of the websites have charts of things covered, as well as estimates, so you can open up a few browser windows and compare them side-by-side.

Older companies tend to be more stable, I wouldn't buy insurance (any kind) from someone who hasn't been around awhile. There isn't as much regulation of pet insurance as the human kinds, so make sure to check around.

If you can afford to pay the whole year at once, do it. It's much easier, and since of the insurances you're likely to have by far the cheapest, it was a good idea for me! I only have one cat though.

Wow! With the thousands of members on this site, I thought there would be more than just one reply. I was hoping to see what other people had to say in response to Crystal's post. Health insurance for pets is something I've given consideration to recently and was hoping to see some input. Surely there are other people here with pet health insurance?

Sophie, I've only been here a few months and I've already seen at least four or five threads about pet insurance. If you do a search, you'll find pages of threads about it. Usually, when there aren't many responses it is because most people have already answered it at least once. If that's the case, try doing a search and you'll find all kinds of thoughts and opinions from the past few years.

I have pet insurance too, but like Anakat I don't know how it works in the US. For example, you can't get policies over here that cover routine things like vaccinations or policies for indoor cats. I'm with petplan and have made 2 claims so far for which they paid up no problem. I've actually been paid more than I've paid them over the years so far. I wouldn't be without it.

I'm the same - I don't think there are any other plans available in Ireland except Petplan from Allianz - they seem fine and their rates are very reasonable.

I am considering it too. I do like the routine coverage - I want to make sure that I can always take my kitty for anything and not worry about putting it off if I don't have enough at the right time. At least I know I will some of it back. Hopefully, my baby won't have any serious problems, but if she ever needs special attention or medicine I want to make sure she gets it.

My rent went up $150 a month starting next month (ouch!) so I doubt I will be able to get it soon. I have enough to make sure she can have a regular vet visit if necessary, but I don't think I will be able to afford the insurance until I get my Christmas bonus from work at the end of the year. I want to pay for the full year at once.

VPI seems like the most reliable and widely accepted in my area. I like that the emergency vets here take it as well.

We recommend VPI the most. They have been around the longest and most of our clients who have it are pleased with it. Definitely do your research on it. Sorry about your rent, ours went up too, but not that much!

Good luck.
