So, to make a long story short...last night I take one of the cats to the local emergency vet and then on to the University emergency clinic... he vomited two and a half days ago and went downhill from there. Final diagnosis...underlying pancreantitis aggravated by a change in food (twice in 2 months trying to help one of the other cats...all three eating the same stuff) resulted in bile backing up in the liver and developing into bacterial hepetitis (spelling???). Spent the night and all day in ICU and just came from seeing him and speaking with the vet. We switched food in the first place to help the other cat (Buster) and for the first 6 weeks his improved. Then the vomiting and the itching came back so we went from chicken to fish. Now, (two weeks tomorrow since adding the fish) Buster has stopped itching and vomiting (for the time being at least I am betting he starts again) and Neigi landed in the ER in bad shape. We went from Nutro Nat. Choice Senior Care (used that for 3 years or more while Buster was on prednisone) to Californial Natural Chicken dry (took Buster off pred) to Calif. Nat. Herring and Sweet Potato. The vet at the University is suggesing Hill's Prescription Diet Z/D formula. Hypoallergenic and will help keep both sick kitties digestive systems calm. I just looked at the ingredient list and am not overly impressed. I am wondering if anyone has had experience with this food. Thanks for the input.

I have had exp only with C/D cat food by hills...ingredients might be questionable to some but the results are THERE. My cat doesnt tolereate antibiotics well(very sick after few days) and this really has saved this cat by keeping his urine right where it should be. Like I said no exp with the z/d. RJ

Dumb question ... why did you take a allergic animal off a one protein one grain food( cal natural chn and rice ) and move to a one protein two grain( or starch) ?? I would actually talk to the vet about venison and pea if you didnt like the Cal natural chn results...the venison is avail over the counter and is made by Natural Balence... RX wise there are fish and potato , venison and pea , duck and pea ... Z/D is a great Rx for severe allergies and is often the last resort ... How was Buster while on Cal Natural chn and rice??

Yeah z/d is great for severe food allergies, I agree with sharky, I'd see about a duck & pea/venison & pea/rabbit & pea etc. z/d really messes with their bowels [wicked diarrhea] but before feeding that it's easier to go to a food that is limited ingredients first.

I agree about Z/D's ingredients list, but there is no arguing with success. This food was a true last resort for one of my cats (Joshua), and extended his life (and greatly, greatly improved the quality of his life as we were at wits end) by several years.

No diarhea with it, instead it solved all his stool issues, his fur pulling, his vomitting.

We had them all on Nutro for at least a couple years. All the while Buster was taking prednisone to control the supposed pancreantitis. I really wanted to get him off the pred. The new vet suggested CN Chk/rice because of it's simplicity. We switched and stopped the pred. After two weeks his bald belly was furry again, the hair on his ears grew back, no vomiting. GREAT ! After another 4 weeks...vomiting and chewing at his paws to the point of baldness. Called the vet and he suggested avoiding chicken. Switched to CN herring/sweet potato. after 3 days...no vomiting, no chewing. another week goes by bringing us to Thursday when I took Neigi to ER. I really haven't had a chance to look at other foods. Big event at work today which is why Neigi will stay at the hosp. until tonight and then I have tomorrow off. I can do somemore research then. For now, Buster seems ok on the herring and Neigi will need tube feedings for the next couple days. I always thought Neigi was the "hardy" one, but this last switch put him over the edge...

my dog gets Hills Presciption Diet z/d. It works wonders. his coat used to fall out in clumps, he would scratch nonstop.. he stunk so bad.. but the food helps.
That and flea medication once a month, as he is allergic to fleas as well as corn.

Neigi is now home. I have cans of liquid nutrition and 2 months worth of antibiotics and a sample of z/d. The goal right now is for him to get his appetite back and want to eat regular food and not need the feeding tube. He is soooooooooo much better and I am sooooo thankful to the emergency clinics.
