I totally sympathise. Our yard isn't fenced and my little dog has no road sense, she will sit in the middle of the road if I let her (of course I don't) so we installed a chain link fence in a small area so she could go out there. I also take her for short walks 3 times a day. I would recommend chain link rather than electric -- more humane! I don't like the idea of leaving her chained unless you are nearby, because a bigger dog could come on your property and attack her and she couldn't get away.

I am very sorry about your other dog. I just read a book called the Dog Listener by Jan Fennell, and basically, it's a humane way of dealing with aggressive dogs by positioning yourself as the alpha dog -- they realise they don't have to be alpha and eventually relax. I recommend it to anyone whose dogs have behavioural problems. it would probably help with Val too, as she will be more obedient.

I know I've been fighting with my dad dozens of times over the dogs. He thinks they can be turned loose in the yard all day. I think not. So, they sleep inside at night, are inside all day, & got out into kennels in the morning to potty. They get walks whenever the weather is good(not too hot for them & not too cold) & when I have time(atleast once a day). We built the kennels out of cattle panels...basically 5' high. At $15-20 a panel, it was well worth it. Both are big dogs(50 & 90 lbs), so they cannot get out through the holes. Another way to burn energy is to play in the house. I move the kitchen talbe & chairs so we have room to thunder about. We also play games outside while the dogs are cabled(during hunting season, I am particularly careful & the dogs are always cabled or kenneled or on a leash..not taking a chance of one of them getting a brilliant idea of running off).

I agree with the training part. I would suggest trying to train her "outta the road". I did for walking my two. When we walk & a car is approaching, I say "outta the road" & they move over into the road ditch. It is really helpful to walk two dogs at a time.

Good luck with Val! She is quite cute, BTW!

sorry its so long but i had to vent about her. i love her to death but she has got to be the stupidest dog on earth.i'm thinking i should tell my mom that after we get back on our feet (financially speaking) that we should get a fence put in our back yard. so my question to you is what kind of fence do you have and do you guys think an electric fence or a chain fence would be better for a dog?[/quote]

That must have been a very scary experience. My dog died about a year ago. Someone let her of her leash while I was gone
It was so sad I stayed up all night looking for her. Anyway if anyone knows mzjazz2u she is my mom and posted about it about a year ago. She included pictures of my poor ABBY.

Anyway I was going to say you could consider getting a dog run. It is a lot less expensive and works well. A little over a year ago and you can get them for like $300 If I remember right. That might be a better option since fences are pricey

A dog run is basically a small kennel. The ones I have seen are 6' x 6'. They are chain link, similar to yard fences. Basically, we used cattle panels to build a dog run, but for much cheaper than actually buying one(it helps to have a crafty dad
).

One of my neighbor's built a dog run alongside her house. 10' wide & 25' long. It's pretty nice for her Beagle(who lives up to breed standards
).

On the fence issue I would suggest chain link, as they can still see what's going on outside the fence. i had a wooden rivacy fence at rental house and Dawg was always digging out, since we moved to house with chain link fence Dawg & Charlie never dig.

A dog run is like a small fenced in area that most people put in their back yards. You can put it up and take it down. So if you move you don't lose it like you do with a fence. You can get them at Home depot. You can get them big I'm sure. The ones Iv'e seen have been big enough to park a car in maybe a little bigger.(Just to give you an idea of the size) They are a lot cheaper then a fence and a lot safer then just chaining them up. Another nice thing is you should be able to put a lock on it so people just can't go in your back yard and let your dog out.

Hun, you gotta train your dog. That's all this comes down to - there are lots of things you can do to prevent this from happening without resorting to tying her up all the time! If you want some tips pm me and I'd be happy to help you out

I read this post hoping and praying that you took her to the vet. But not vet mentioned. Please tell me I'm wrong. Just because she appears fine does not mean she doesn't have internal injuries.

I've had this happen more times than I wish to say. Hence I take extended breaks from these boards and I know some other members who do the same thing. Its so easy for things to be taken out of context or taken the wrong way you just want to scream. Ugh.

i know! i have seen this happen so many times! people may do things wrong but that is what this site is about, teaching people how to do the right things, not shove it down their throats and tell them they are bad people and dont deserve an animal, etc. etc.
