Okay-

I just found out that not only did my boss have his 2 cats declawed but his sister has her declawed as well and thinks its okay!!! We work together and i just got into an argument with her over this. She thinks it is perfectly normal because the cats will scratch her furniture...DUH!! Then do not have cats because that is what they do. You can teach them to use a scratching post...mine does...I NEVER catch Sebastian on the furniture scratching...if he does it when I am not there I have no idea and so what...it is the choice I made when deciding to have a cat. YOu can not make a perfect animal that makes no noise or mess...its unnatural!!

I just really want to scream right now!!!! Her vet told her that it is harder on them being neutered than declawed!!!!!!!!! I said tell me the name of that vet so i can stay far AWAY!!

Sorry I just had to vent so I could get back to work!...I think delcawing is sooooo wrong and cruel and unusual punishment and it irritates me tha people still do it.

Just goes to show that if you could gather all of this womans (and her vet's) stupidity together, concentrate it into a liquid form, we wouldn't need gas anymore!

I wish they'd make declawing illegal. Or better yet, if you declaw you animal, you have to cut your own fingers off at the knuckle as well!

A woman came into the shelter I volunteer for last night. Her 6 y/o cat is spraying. There is no crystals/UTI...the cat just has a difference of opinion. She is spayed & here's the kicked FOUR PAW DECLAW!! I wanted to smack her upside the head & tell her "your cat is spraying because you had her declawed!" At least she is willing to keep the cat at her house. The only reason she is listing her is because her husband says she has to get rid of the cat. This woman says "I would rather have her live in a farm than be euthanized". Too bad we will not put a 4 paw declawed cat ouside. Poor Cali has to suffer because of her owners stupidity!

Sorry, I just wanted to rant about that & reading your post got me good & mad.

I agree that de-clawing should be illegal, why is the US one of the only developed nations where it is not????

IMO, because most of the population is too darn lazy to bother with training a cat not to scratch. I mean, we have soft paws, but people don't want to bother with them. I actually had someone tell me that it was too much work/money to bother with soft paws. Really!?!? 3 pkgs of 40 caps costs as much as a declaw surgery does here & they are cheap here!

Please understand that I am against declawing too...Whitey and Luna both have all four claws. I also agree that it should be illegal in the US..

However, I don't consider it something to furiously angry over...its more a knowledge that we have that we need to educate other people. IMO its best to educate people on what they did to their cats and make them feel guilty the rest of the cats lives rather than yell and scream about it.

well, i know I am new here but thought I would jump right in and get involved!!
Here in the UK NOBODY has thier cat declawed. It is considered barbaric, and is looked upon with absolute horror.

I think it DISGUSTING to de-claw an aniaml for the owners convienience, and to the detriment of the cat.

Surely these people can see the pain theyre putting thier pets through?

As has been said, if you dont want a cat with claws, dont get one at all. It's awfull, and un-called for.
Mine have a 6ft high cat tower, with sisal rope and mulit platforms, they love scratching at that.

Really wish de-clawing would be made illegal

both of my best friends cats are declawed and i asked them why and they said that the cats tear up their furniture and all the regular excuses. none of my cats are declawed. i also think its a sick thing to do. and one of my friends cats refuses to use the litterbox because of it.

when i gorw up (hee hee) and become a vet i will tell people to try soft claws instead if they try to tell me to declaw their cats. in fact, i'll put them on all 4 paws of their cat for them and let the people try it out for free and then see what they think. ha ha i'm a genious!

I have 4 cats with a leather couch. No scratching. I would never declaw my babies.

TCS members the world over are in agreement with you!! Those poor cats
Your boss and his vet both need some Humane Education - perhaps they've heard of the Humane Society of the United States & the ASPCA, both groups are opposed to declawing except in extreme cases.
I'm glad that you spoke up for cats; slowly, surely we are getting declawing banned. I know that too many laws has its risks, but sometimes, right is right and must be established.... here's to you for not backing down

Yes you are! It is a brilliant plan - education is the key to change. I suspect many people don't really understand what declawing is, and how it affects the cat, and that they have other (and better) options. Even from a purely selfish point of view (which I don't advocate) it is better to use soft claws than to declaw, as your cat will not develop the behavioural problems associated with declawing.

It's a combination of ignorance, poor legislation, and apathy, both on the part of 'owners' and vets.

It makes me angry too. Sometimes I have to really bite my tongue and remind myself that most people aren't breaking the law by doing it - as I live in a county that doesn't allow declawing I find that very difficult to do. I would not want a vet who was prepared to declaw a cat looking after my cats in any capacity - I could never trust him/her to have my cat's welfare as priority.

This type of thread has gone around and around. MOST people are dead against declawing BUT if a cat has a chance to have a nice loving home DECLAWED or stay in a shelter or be pts WITH claws it is better to have it declawed.

PROBLEM is the VETS! MOSTS of them do it for the money! My neighbor AND the Nutro Max Rep both have had their cats declawed as the Vet told them it was not a bad thing to do and actually reccomended it!

Nutro Max lady tried to tell me they no longer cut off part of the toe but do it with a lazor instead and she REFUSED to listen to me or the rescue lady. She thought WE were crazy!

So you see it is the VETS who are causing this misery - for MONEY!

I am sorry guys...I did not mean to get everyone heated and post something so negative especially on a Friday...I was just so IRRITATED and needed to vent somewhere before I choked her!!!!!
So I found a website with photos of the surgery and I printed it out in color and put it on her desk for Monday morning. I know that sounds extreme but it make me feel better that she will see what actually was done to her cats and maybe feel bad.

Thanks for all the support though

How i disagree with declawing, and even more so with having all 4 paws done( i dont see why a vet would even agree to do all 4) what is better, to declaw a cat or a cat that may not have a home?

Yes i think declawing should be illegal to do here, but i think if they do that more people wont take a kitty.

Don't get so angry with people who declaw their cats, or want to - they're just not educated. Most of them assume it's just like getting your nails cut and have no idea what it does to the cat. It doesn't help that they ask the wrong vet who says "yes this will stop them from scratching your furniture".

If someone has or wants to, explain what the process really is and what it means for the cat. If they hear all of the evidence against declawing, and still want to do it, then scream and yell....

I wish we could educate more people on the amount of stress and pain that the animal goes through. I too believe that de-clawing should be illegal. I believe that if you de-claw your cat, you should not have a cat because you lack the responsibility to take care of it. With a pet, you should do what is best for it, not what is best for you.
