About a year ago, Emily developed a tiny dark spot right on her nose. (She's 4 yrs old and indoor only.) It looks like a freckle. It's definitely not a bug or dirt. Any idea what it could be? And do you think it's something I should be worried about? I forgot to point it out to the vet because I thought it wasn't a big deal. Has this happened to anyone else?

While it is probably just an age spot, a change in pigment should be examined by the vet. Is it just a a discoloration, or is the texture different? Is it scabby at all?

is the "freckle" raised? does it seem to be sensitive? If no then it might not be anything to worry about but you always want to have it on your mind cause you never know for sure. When I got my kitty she had a little tiny freckle on her lip. But now she has more freckles on her lips. Actually it looks like on giant black spot on her lip but its actually two or three freckles that have appeared. And it turned out to be nothing at all but freckles.

Just keep your eye on it and make sure it doesn't change color and if it starts to grow rapidly then you might want to get it checked out.

let us know and good luck

I've heard (and I havent done much research on this and keep forgetting to ask Dr. Kathy) that orange and lighter kitties are more prone to sometimes developing little spots on their noses, lips and gums... Ollie has a tiny black dot on his nose - I've had him since October 2004 and it hasn't changed (grown, discolored, etc) since then and the vet's seen him many times and she always looks well at his face, lips and gums (well, I mean she looks him good all over, but a lot of vets can miss little things) and she's not worried about it.... it's just a little black dot on the one side of his cute pink nose - not raised or anything.... I always think it's a speck of dirt, haha and try to wipe it off with my finger, then I remember! He's got a couple on the inside of his lips too, hehe

My orange boys both have identical teeny freckles on the inside of their lips. The first day I found them I squeezed them, rubbed them, and decided they both had lip cancer. When I calmed down I realized that identical and symmetrical freckles in two litter brothers is extremely unlikely to be cancer

My vet said the same thing about orange kitties and freckles.

Now I am seeing four black whiskers developing on one of them and I am positive he has whisker cancer. I'm an idiot.

Nathan, my black cat, has a blotch on the inside of one of his ears I call his "gravy spot," because, well, to me it looks sort of like he got a splotch of gravy spilled on him.
He's had it the whole time we've had him, and it's nothing, just a birthmark sort of thing. Since the spot your kitty has isn't raised or anything, I'm guessing it's just a freckle. I would just keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't grow, and the next time you have Emily in to the vet, make a note to ask about it. If it starts growing or becomes raised or otherwise changes in anyway, I'd take her to the vet specifically for that.

Okay thanks everyone!! I feel better. It's not raised, it doesn't seem to be sensitive, and it hasn't changed at all since it appeared. I'll have to remember to point it out to the vet next time just in case.

My calico is like this too - and she is prone to waxy build up - so she really hates it when I forget that that's meant to be there!
