I think my first choice would be
Innova dry and EVO wet from NaturaPet.com
Then Life’s Abundance dry from HealthyPetNet.com

I'd like to say Merricks wet, but have heard they made some changes not necessarily for the better and my cats weren't terribly fond of most of their flavors.

Also Nature's Variety canned is an excellent food too.

If money were no object my crew wou8ld eat like kings and queens daily.
Oh wait... they already do!

Edited to add:
I just caught that you said expert types, which I am not.

I am currently feeding Innova EVO dry. I tried the wet but I think there was something that was causing a little itchiness in one of my cats. It did it twice so there must be something in it that is not in the dry. It is still an excellent wet food. I am currently feeding Wellness chicken wet. There are some on this site that will not feed Wellness because it has garlic in it but it is a grainfree wet that my cats will consistently eat. I think even those who won't feed a food with garlic will say that other than that it is an excellent food.

Innova EVO dry and Innova EVO wet
I also like Innova red can wet food, and Wellness, though some are concerned with the garlic in Wellness.

Is there a need to feed wet food? To me, wet food is a treat rather than a necessity, so Stumpy just gets Iams Original, and some dental "treats" during the day and catnip.

I personally think at least some wet food is a good thing. It's a good source of water which is important as most cats don't drink enough water, esp as they get older. Not drinking enough water can contribute to the formation of crystals as the urine is concentrated. I also think good quality wet food is better than even the best dry food as the latter still contains a lot of carbs which is not ideal for a carnivore.

I am not an expert at all... but Blue Spa is supposed to be really good... and my crew loves it. I'm pretty sure it includes Chicken though.

There's a "allergy" brand of food that uses venison or rabbit (your choice)... but it comes from the Vets office and I'm blanking on the brand right now.

When it comes to dry food, I think it depends on the cat....different things work for different cats. I feed Eukanuba dry (because my kitten really likes it and it has the least amount of grains other than EVO--I had a bad experience w/ the dry evo w/ my ferrets), but I do feed canned EVO.

I never used to feed my cats wet until I came here and learned that it was supposed to be better for the cats, i now feed Meow mix pouches in the evening and I have NEVER had cats with as beautiful as coats as my cats do now, so I vote for at least one daily feeding of wet

as far as the "no price restriction best", I don't know, cause I have a price restriction
so the best my cats gets is Chicken Soup, I've fed Nutro before and honestly wasn't impressed.

It is by Royal Canin (venison and green peas). They took over IVD. I switched Penny to it but have to add FF to the bowl so that she will eat the wet food. If she does well I might stop the venison and go with FF fish kind only. BTW, is Hill's Sceince Diet not on the very good dry food list in this forum? My local cat experts use it for their cats and when they are older they switched to C/D.

Science Diet contains by-products which is why a lot of members don't serve it.... and I forgot to answer your question of something w/o chicken... if you're talking a replacement for the WET fancy feast, I can suggest Meow Mix pouches, the first ingredient is meat and they make a few varieties with out chicken, very reasonably priced also

There are alot of good food s ... realize the best dry is still candish to a carnivore so if you can wet is better ...

I have one on Natural choice one on raw and canned ... It depends on kitty... If you have a petsmart around go in and read labels... some fancy feast is good but for the $$ you can do way better ...

Evo works for some I like how it reads but in both dog and cat it didnt work here ... Oh and feeding a raw diet is cheaper

To answer your question, Fancy Feast is not a very high quality food and in fact I would never feed it to my cats. Unfortunately there are some cats that won't eat anything else in which case FF is better than nothing.

Wet food really is best for your kitty. We changed from an all-dry diet to 2 wet feedings per day with 1/4 cup dry for day-time snacking between 2 cats. Consensus is that dry food contributes to urine crystals, particularly in neutered males.

Cats will also eat less if they are fed a better quality food so you probably end up paying the same in the long-term, i.e., costs more up front but lasts longer.

For dry food, we started feeding Royal Canin for Siamese cats and our 2 love it.

They both still beg every night for thier Whiskas Temptation treats and since they eat good quality food we give in to their "candy" requests of Temptation treats.

I forgot to mention Chicken Soup for the Cat Lovers Soul as a quality dry which too me some time, but I did get my guys to adjust to it.

Nature's Variety canned has a Venison, Duck and Rabbit I believe as well as Chicken and maybe a couple other flavors. I think my guys only liked the Duck and a little of the Chicken of theirs.

Right now I am slipping just a tiny bit of EVO alongside their Fancy Feast. They are used to the junk food wet and even if I wanted, I couldn't afford to feed them all high price canned as they go through 4 to 6 cans a day in this house and I don't know how much MIL goes through with her 3, but I buy several cases of canned a month and 45 to 60 lbs. of dry.

I thought of going the other way and getting them cheaper dry with better quality wet, but I think I'd need a raise in my Social Security to do that.

So far they don't complain and the vet says they all seem to be very healthy.

The funny thing is... when my guys are fussy about one of the quality foods and don't want to eat it, the ferals that always stay outside are happy when they get it.

Harley never got fed wet food until I came here. I also feed him Meow Mix wet pouches - he gets 1 in the morning, 1 at noon and 1 at night for his main meals. He gets fed dry kibble thru the day in case he gets hungry, but he hardly ever touches it. His coat is so shiny and soft too!

He gets fed Whiskas for dry - I know its not the best, but he eats it - and won't eat anything else

I'm starting Davidson on wet as well - and I'm going to try to get him on better dry - so I'm on the hunt for something he'll eat and maybe Harley will start eating too!

I tried all of the foods mentioned and Life's Abundance wet and dry are the only foods Remy can tolerate. He gets gas, diarrhea constipation from all of the others. He loves the wet . I give him a can a day spread over 3x and then free feed him the dry. He's a big boy at 16 lbs and he will be a year old this month. No fat at all on him...

Life's Abundance was the first food I bought that all of mine dived into like Uncle Scrooge McDuck into liquid gold. They absolutely loved it and I wrote the company about how much that impressed me.

If money were no object for me, I'd be considering/consulting with my vet, about moving them onto a new food, ZiwiPeak Daily Cuisine.

For canned, try evangers for cats.

well, i feed 1/2 meow mix market selects & 1/2 chicken soup canned for wet. Cable & Chip love their wet food - Java & Pixel aren't that interested. they usually eat chicken soup dry, altho i bought some natural balance recently to try to clear up Pixel's dandruff. however, she refuses to eat it unless i mix it with the chicken soup dry, which i am still buying for the ferals...so after this batch is gone, i'm going back to the chicken soup dry for my dry. it's so irritating - she used to eat it just fine!
the meow mix market selects are reasonably priced, & are mostly fish, not chicken. there are 8 different flavors available - you'd have to read the labels. i use the market selects instead of the pouches because it's much easier to remove the food from the plastic cans.
