I'm sorry to hear your cat isn't feeling well. It sounds like he has a URI. Wipe his nose with a warm, wet washcloth to wash away any mucus. Put a dab of petroleum jelly on the end of his nose to keep it from getting dry. I have never had this problem with Lilly, but I've seen it in many cats. Set up a humidifier in the room where your cat spends the most time. I recommend feeding a canned food while he is sick and warming it slightly. Give him some chicken broth to drink, too. I also recommend purchasing a heating cat bed. Don't let him outdoors while he is sick. You will need a washcloth, some petroleum jelly, a humidifier, a microwave to warm the food, canned cat food, a heated cat bed, chicken broth and and oral electrolyte solution to mix in with the broth to keep him hydrated.

My cat has that SAME EXACT problem. She has had it for about 9 out of her 13 years. It started out as just sneezing like crazy, then a few years later turned into stuffy nose and sneezing, and now she barely sneezes and her nose gets so stuffed that she has troubles breathing. She does that same weird "snoring" sound as you put it. We have taken her to the vets MULTIPLE times, paid A LOT of money, and every time the vets say the same thing. At this point they should be giving us the dang medications for free because they are really bad at giving a proper diagnostic. My mom has gotten to the point where she'd rather put her out of her misery, but I already lost my cat that I had gotten in preschool and had for 16 wonderful years..I really don't want to lose this one either(shes my little sister's cat who doesn't live with us any more). After my cat got put down I at least had her to comfort me and take her place. Now I am just hoping to hold onto her as long as I can. Did you have any luck finding a solution with your cat's problem yet? I read the posts, but they all basically say the same things.

Wishing you and Thing 1 the best,

Brittany

This sounds like very good ideas. My cat has the same problem also, and she's the only one of our cats that we've ever had who has had this problem. My old cat caught it once and it only lasted a day and she was done(but she just had a REALLY good immune system). I will try the things you listed and hopefully that will help. Thank you for the advice that you gave them.

Many Thanks,

Brittany

For everyone that has a cat with cold symptoms try these little tricks:

FISHMOX - it's an antibotic sold over the counter for fish. It's amoxicillin the same meds that humans and pets use, use about 10mg/lbs - no prescription needed OTC, you find at most pets stores that sell fish and aquarium supplies or online.

LYSINE - L-Lysine, it's an amino acid, one of the building blocks of protein, there are 8 essential amino acids , lysine is mostly used to suppress the herpes virus, shingles etc. in humans and has many other uses, but in cats it helped to suppress and/or get rid of the herpes virus that causes problems in the U R SYSTEM.

RESPIRO-K - it's a natural homeopathic remedy for all pets, for for their U R systems

Hope this info helps, I using these on my cat HANK who we took to the vet and spent large sums of money on and he just got worst, meet a person who takes care of feral cats, she recommended these products and HANK is doing so much better than what the vet did for him at a big saving.

So if my spelling is bad, it's really late.

Good luck everybody, hope all your cats get better.

After double checking the bottle - it's called respo-k company name. PET ALIVE by Native Remedies, good for U R systems infections, You can get it online, lysine you can buy at any store that sells vitamins, I got it at wal-mart.

Thanks again, Rob62

I did go to a vet for a little black female cat that showed up during bitterly cold weather in my garage with my other outdoor cats,  and he wanted to do hundreds of $$ for tests to see if my cat had herpes...... since she's been sneezing with stuff up nose for over a week..  Cat didn't have a temp, but did have a runny nose and sneezing.  Simple deductions are that if there is no temp = no infection after of over a week of this symptom.  Obviously, it's herpes.  But, the vet was more interested in getting my $$ than to make this deduction.  He could just have easily given me an option to the injected antibiotic ($89), in case the injection didn't work.  It didn't. And, he didn't either. I'm not going back.......since my old vet left they seem more interested in the $$ than actually helping.  He got kinduf snotty when I turned him down.  I'm not going back.

So, I'm to conclude its herpes virus which is controlled by lysine (fever blisters, and such).  Have bought the 500mg lysine, which I've used in the past, and chlor-trimeton 4mg (1/4 of the tab), put it into some canned salmon with the juice and let her eat.  When she's well, I'm going to have her spade at another local clinic.

Forgot to say, I crushed up both the Lysine and the  1/4 tab chlor-trimeton b/f putting into the 1/3 can  canned salmon.  She can't smell anything else to eat besides salmon or tuna.  Tuna, btw, is a natural source of lysine.

OK.  It's been overnight and the sniffles and stopped up nose is greatly  improved. She can eat w/o sounding like she's blowing mucus out of her nose.

In fact, the first time I checked her was last night just a few hours after giving it to her and she was noticeably improved.  So, I guess this is the answer.

Have you steamed her in the bathroom to help clear up the stuffiness?  That might help.  Also, try warming up the food as that makes the aroma stronger.

Unfortunate for me and this almost grown kitten,  was  stranger to me until I met her several weeks ago.  Very friendly to me in the garage where she'd taken refuge during the cold weather, polished my ankles while I refilled her and the other cat's food dish for up to two weeks until she turned agressive/violent to them after she'd mated with a visiting tom.  Long story.

I put her in the utility room to give her a definite warm place and to get her away from my 2 older females.  (I also have two indoor/outdoor 18 mos old boys that I rescued last Christmas.  I don't want them to catch whatever she had.)

Tonight I sat in the floor to day with her as I usually just put down the food with meds, pet her a bit and then leave.  She's started swatting me when I leave, so tonight I sat on the floor.  She kept eating and looking over her back to make sure I wasn't leaving.  Then, she walked over to my bare feet, smelled them, and swatted them. Just a little claw, not much.  But, a warning, nonetheless.  Then, she walked up to look into my face, and her eyes were completely dilated.  Not good.  But, she did let me pet her.  Her inability to smell has hampered her ability to tell friend from foe.

I'm/she are working at getting her better..  I just want to be able to spay her so she'll be happier and, I hope, be able to stay peacefully in the garage.

She's a friendly little cat, but a little strange, too.  *cross-fingers*

If you have a vaporizer, you could plug it in for her in the laundry room.  You might also try some calming drops or a Feliway diffuser.

What are calming drops?  Where to get them?

She seems to be doing better with the  500mg Lysine 3x daily, with 1mg of Chlor-Trimeton every 12 hrs.

Bach's Rescue Remedy is one.  You can also look at some of the products from Spirit Essences.  I don't like Chlor-Trimeton because it's bitter.  We use generic loratidine (plain Claritin) 1/4 to 1/2 of a 10mg tablet once a day.

Thanks for the info.

The reason I used Chlor-Trimeton was that on a "ask the vet" site, this was the only decongestant  that was  recommended and gave a warning that the others weren't safe.  I dunno.

I do hide it, though,  along with the Lysine, in about a tablespoon of tuna and once she's eaten all that, I give her the rest of her tuna meal.......to make sure she's getting the meds.   So far, she's eating all of the meds, but does better with the Tuna than with sardines which I first started her on.

Thanks again for the info.  BTW, I use a house humidifier.  I wouldn't trust plugging in a vaproizer in my utility room.  Too little flat space and she might knock it over and/or get electrocuted or hurt.

Today, we take her for a checkup prior to getting her spayed on Monday.  She's getting stir crazy from being kept in the utility room.  I feel sorry for her, but I want to get her well so that she can be loose again.  But.....I'm not sure how she will fare once loose unless I can tempt her back with the Tuna, which she's come to love.  The Lysine is recommended at 3x daily initially for treatment, then 2x daily for followup care.  *sigh*

I think I've pretty well shielded her from my two young boy cats (who go into the back yard when they go outside),  surely hope my two older females who stay in the garage don't catch this from her who use the front yard and beyond for their wanderings.

It's so strange........the two territories never get mixed up amongst the cats. :)

My poor little homeless black kitty.

I have given chlor-trimeton in the past and all my kitties start foaming at the mouth because it's so bitter.  I'm not sure if I mentioned this, but I add a bit of water to my cats' wet food and drop in the piece of the tablet.  Let it sit for a minute or so, then crush it with the back of the spoon.  It dissolves, I mix it up, and they lap it up in their wet food.  If you don't have wet food or your cats don't like wet food, try it in a bit of plain meat baby food.

She takes it just fine.  I crush it up (with the back of a spoon) and mix it with the Tuna., but I'll think about dissolvlng it in water first.  She's fully grown, so probably isn't reacting like a small kitten would  No foaming at all.  The vet check went well,  She's getting spade on Monday and then 5 days recovery b/f letting her go.  Thanx for all your advice..

 Congrats on your new furkid
.  First thing you should do whenever you bring a new little one home is get him checked our by the Vet, and especially get him checked for all the "biggies", like FELV, etc.  just for piece of mind.

Did you get him from a shelter?  It seems must shelter kitties automatically come with URIs, so if he doesn't need antibiotics, then just follow the advise posted above (steam in the bathroom, warm his food if he stops eating well, that type of thing).
