I am new to cats and am totally unprepared for this. I am hoping you guys will have so advice. I couple of weeks ago we adopted a stray cat. She started coming around and when she didn't leave I started feeding her. I live in the country and it's not unusual to find strays (dogs and cats) that have been dropped in the woods. This cat struck me as one of those. She is very friendly.
I noticed she was pregnant and called the only vet I know. My horse's vet
He gave me the basics of what to do for her and told me not to worry. Got me an appt for next week for momma and babies with a regular vet. Yesterday she started showing signs of labor so I brought her into the house, got her set up with a place to have the kittens. This morning at about 8:30 am she lost her plug and had some bloody show. She has been having that off and on all day. She has been licking herself like crazy and goes though periods of time where she is panting and kind of looks like she pushes a little, then she gets out of the box and has a bite of food. I am surprised by her eating because everything I have tried to read in the last 36 hours said she wouldn't eat. She is also very small, which makes me nervous.
So I guess my question is how long after they lose their plug does it normal take for active, kitten producing labor start? Will it be obvious she is ready to give birth? I thought it was obvious a couple hours ago and then she was eating again. Any advice you all have about this would be most appreciated. I am a nervous wreck who has a whole new respect for what my hubby went through waiting for our kids to finally be born.
I do have to say that after 33 years of not being a cat person, this little girl has me converted.

Any kittens yet? I'm glad to see a cat conversion.
I have new kittens myself, and they are just so cool. Keep us updated!

Welcome to tcs

You're a doll for taking this girl in...

She may start and stop, especially if she is not quite sure what to make of her new surroundings yet.
My cat Church actually got up to eat between kittens and certainly continued to eat through her labor, so not everycat goes by the book. In fact, most don't! LOL Maybe someone needs to write a new book. LOL
The time between seing the plug and labor can really vary, but if she is washing a lot and mild pushing I'd say very soon.

Anyway, best of luck!

Thank for the replies. I am a wreck but she is calm as can be. We do plan on keeping her and one of the kittens. I have found homes for the rest, provided she doesn't have more than 5. She will be spayed as soon as the kittens are weaned. She really is a sweetie pie and I am just in love with her.
No kittens yet, more spotting, lots of pacing, laying down, licking and then more pacing.

with the pacing, laying down, licking, pacing etc. I would say she is really really close. most that I have seen will do that just before pushing and alot will start doing a circle (while standing) then lay down, lick etc. while pushing.

Your story and mine are identical. I rescued a stray two weeks before she delivered and I love her and the kittens dearly. She sounds ready to pop, even though you've not known her long, ita likely she will still want you with her, Ruby did (in fact, she waited until we got home to deliver --i think so, anyway.) Good luck!
