Hey everybody, just wanted to request some vibes for Consumercity (Barbara) and me. We have a meeting today, as representatives of the Coalition for Animal Justice, with an investigator and staff vet from the county shelter that serves much of the Cincinnati area. This shelter is notorious for it's high kill rate (especially cats), poor record in investigating animal abuse cases, adopting out sick animals and doing little to support low-cost spay/neuter and TNR. We're hoping to get some answers about their practices, then work to change them, and could really use some of those powerful TCS vibes to make this a productive meeting. Thanks!

Thanks for the vibes and support, everybody!
I'm spending my lunch hour going over some the issues we're planning to discuss, then Barbara and I are meeting in a couple of hours to be sure we're ready. The actual meeting is at 3:00. This is a long time in coming and I'm really hoping we can make a difference for the animals. Most people in Cincinnati don't know just how bad things are at this shelter and how little is actually accomplished. It's time for change!

Hey guys, just wanted to update you on the results of our meeting. Thanks so much for the vibes. You were definitely with us in spirit!

I'm sure Barbara would agree it was a productive meeting. We definitely picked up on operation manager and vet's frustration in dealing with animal abuse cases. They respond to many, many calls every year and issue a lot of citations, but very few cases make it to court because either the prosecutor's office doesn't take them seriously, witnesses refuse to testify or due to lack of evidence. They also share our concern and frustration about the shelter's high kill rate, which averages 85-90% for cats and a little less for dogs. That said, they don't really seem to be doing much to lower their kill rates other than promoting adoptions. That's great, but not enough. They don't have a low cost spay/neuter program available to the public. They also don't actively promote or support TNR, considering it to be "too controversial." So, I gave them a lot of research that my group has done on cities where shelters have been able to significantly lower the numbers of adoptable animals euthanized by setting up spay/neuter programs and taking an active roll in TNR.

As far as our next step, Barbara and I are planning to set up a meeting with someone in the prosecutor's office to make them aware of the need to take animal cruelty cases more seriously. From the standpoint of our TNR group, I think we really need to apply pressure to get the county shelter to change its practices.

Thanks for your support!

Eileen, I'm so sorry I didn't see this earlier! But I'm glad to hear they accepted the info.

As to your next meeting regarding animal cruelty, I don't know if you've already seen www.StrayPetAdvocacy.org yet or not, but it may be a useful resource for you. We have links to quite a few reports on The Need for Strong Cruelty Legislation, most focused on the strong and documented correlation between animal abuse and violence towards humans: http://www.straypetadvocacy.org/html...tion.html#Need

I don't know if you would find something like this helpful (in the future), but we also have a presentation already created specifically to help lobby for a low-cost spay/neuter program (which would be an essential part of any TNR program - and the low-cost spay/neuter program could be for the exclusive use of TNR programs if you want to narrow the scope of future responsibility by the County): (a PDF file): The Need for Low-Cost Sterilization Programs: Saving Tax Dollars

There are also a lot of links to articles/reports on TNR Programs and their effectiveness and includes info on TNR Proposals and model programs: http://www.straypetadvocacy.org/html...l_control.html

Just thought I'd let you know it's out there in case you hadn't already found the site - and perhaps there are some helpful/useful links in there that you haven't already discovered.

Congrats to you and your group for the work you're doing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My best,

Laurie
